Omotola Donates Entire ₦22m Producer Earnings From ‘Mother’s Love’ To NGO

Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has given an account of the money generated from her movie Mother’s Love, explaining what happened to the proceeds after the film’s cinema run.

The actress disclosed that the movie recorded a total box-office gross of ₦103,094,663. However, the amount was significantly reduced after several expenses and industry deductions were taken out.

She explained that the deductions covered payments and costs involving exhibitors and distributors, as well as printing, advertising, value added tax, entertainment tax and withholding tax, among other cinema-related expenses.

After all of these deductions had been made, ₦22,276,558 was left as the amount that accrued to the producers of Mother’s Love.

Rather than keeping the money as proceeds from the film, Omotola said the entire amount was donated to Slum to School Africa, an organisation that works with children from underserved communities.

Taking to Instagram to explain the figures, she said the disclosure was in keeping with a promise made earlier concerning the proceeds from the movie.

“I have come back to you as promised to give account of the proceeds from 'Mother's Love'. At the end of our run, we had made ₦103,094,663.

After deduction from exhibitors, distributors, print, advertising, value added tax, entertainment tax and withholding tax, all deductions and everything else from cinemas, the money that was accrued to us as producers of Mother’s was ₦22,276,558.

So, a 100% of that money, as promised by Red Hot Concepts, was donated to the NGO, Slum to School Africa...”

The breakdown gives a clearer picture of how a film’s box-office figure differs from the money that eventually reaches its producers. While Mother’s Love crossed the ₦100 million mark in gross earnings, the amount available to the producers after the listed deductions was just over ₦22 million.

Omotola’s disclosure also puts the focus on the purpose behind the movie’s proceeds. According to her, every naira of the amount that accrued to the producers was directed to Slum to School Africa.

The donation means the ₦22,276,558 was not treated simply as a return from the movie’s cinema performance. Instead, the proceeds were channelled towards an organisation focused on supporting children who need access to education and other opportunities.

The actress had previously indicated that the proceeds would be given to the NGO, making the latest disclosure an account of what was generated and the amount that was ultimately available for donation.

The figures also highlight the various costs that come with taking a Nigerian movie through cinemas. A film’s reported gross does not represent the final amount received by its producers, as several parties and statutory charges are deducted before the producers receive their share.

For Mother’s Love, that process took the initial ₦103 million-plus gross down to ₦22.2 million. Omotola has now confirmed that the entire amount was donated to Slum to School Africa as promised.
