The Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) has unveiled the shortlist for the inaugural edition of The Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts, recognizing 11 promising documentary filmmakers who advanced from a competitive field of 98 submissions.
The initiative is designed to celebrate young Nigerian creatives while encouraging them to tell authentic stories that reflect the nation's rich cultural diversity.
The competition, which is open to Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 35, offers a grand prize of $20,000. For its maiden edition, entrants were challenged to produce documentaries centered on the theme "Identity," exploring the traditions, cultures, communities, and personal experiences that shape contemporary Nigeria.
The shortlisted filmmakers include Blessing Bulus, Jessica Chinyere, Unmi Bukar, Dominic Fayenuwo, Tosin Keshinro, Ibrahim Khalil Bala, Peter Oghenetega, Joseph Okulaja, Feranmi Abiola, Abraham Ayodele Aiwyuse, and Aimalohi Ojeamiran.
Their documentaries examine a broad range of subjects, from cultural festivals and indigenous communities to the resilience of women, migration, and the preservation of local heritage.
According to the organisers, the quality of submissions demonstrated the creativity and storytelling ability of young Nigerian filmmakers.
Members of the advisory board noted that the shortlisted documentaries offer unique perspectives on national identity while highlighting the country's cultural richness through compelling visual narratives.
The finalists will now proceed to the last stage of the competition, where a panel of judges will evaluate the entries before announcing the overall winner during NLNG's Grand Award Night scheduled for October 2026. The eventual winner will become the first recipient of The Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts.

It joins the prestigious Nigeria Prize for Literature and the Nigeria Prize for Science, both of which have gained international recognition for rewarding outstanding achievements in their respective fields.
