Mo Abudu Draws The Line: “You Can’t Be Calling Me By My First Name Anyhow”

Mo Abudu is not interested in throwing traditional values out of the window, especially when it comes to respect and the way younger people address their elders.

The EbonyLife founder made her position known during a conversation with Toke Makinwa on Toke Moments, where the discussion touched on her upbringing, her reputation in business and what she expects from relationships.

For Abudu, age and seniority still matter. She explained that her grandmother played a major role in shaping the values she holds today, and those lessons have stayed with her even as society continues to change.

Asked about being addressed as “Aunty,” Abudu made it clear that she is not comfortable with younger people simply calling her Mo without considering the respect traditionally attached to age.

“I am very traditional. I was brought up in Ondo by my grandmother. You can’t be calling me by my first name anyhow. I won’t take it!”

Her comments come at a time when the way people address one another has become much more relaxed, particularly among younger Nigerians. But for Abudu, familiarity does not automatically cancel out respect.

The media executive also turned the conversation towards her reputation in the business world. She has sometimes been described as a “shark” because of her tough and determined approach, but Abudu questioned whether a man displaying the same qualities would receive the same label.

“If I was a man, they wouldn’t say I was a shark. They’re going to say she’s an astute businesswoman.”

For her, the difference in how men and women are perceived in business is difficult to ignore. A quality that can be viewed as strength, confidence or sharp business sense in a man can sometimes attract harsher descriptions when displayed by a woman.

Abudu also touched on another personal subject — relationships.

Despite the ups and downs that can come with love, she does not appear worried about having her heart broken at this point in her life.

“Nobody can break my heart.”

When it comes to choosing a partner, Abudu also knows what she wants. She would rather be with someone around her age or older, but age alone is not enough to win her respect.

For her, achievement matters.

“You must have achieved something.”

Her comments give a glimpse into a woman who appears comfortable with her values and is not looking to water them down simply to fit changing social expectations.

From the way she wants to be addressed to the qualities she looks for in a partner, Abudu’s message is straightforward: respect, accomplishment and strong personal values still count.
