Veteran Nollywood actress Tayo Adeniyi has encouraged women not to define their happiness or self-worth solely by marriage or motherhood, urging those who have not experienced either to embrace fulfilling and meaningful lives on their own terms.
Speaking in a video shared on social media, the actress addressed women, particularly those in their late 30s and 40s, who may be feeling pressure because they are unmarried or do not have children. According to her, society often places unrealistic expectations on women, making many believe that marriage and parenthood are the only true indicators of success or fulfilment. She insisted that this belief should be challenged.
Adeniyi explained that while marriage and raising a family can be beautiful experiences, they should never become the sole purpose of a woman's life.
She noted that many women spend years hoping for a relationship or waiting for the right partner, only to become discouraged when things do not happen according to their expectations.
Instead of allowing disappointment to take over, she advised them to focus on building successful careers, discovering new passions, developing meaningful friendships and prioritising their personal growth.
The actress also warned against entering unhealthy relationships simply because of the fear of remaining single.
According to her, settling for emotional abuse, manipulation or an unhappy marriage is far more damaging than living independently.
She encouraged women to recognise their value and avoid making life-changing decisions based solely on societal pressure.
She further stressed that having children should also be viewed as a personal choice and not an obligation placed on every woman.
Adeniyi believes women can make positive contributions to society through their careers, businesses, humanitarian work, mentorship and other meaningful pursuits, regardless of whether they become mothers.
Her comments have sparked conversations online, with many social media users praising her for addressing an issue that is often overlooked.
Several women shared their experiences of facing constant questions from relatives and friends about marriage, saying the pressure can affect self-esteem and mental well-being. Others agreed that happiness should not depend on meeting traditional expectations.
However, some people maintained that marriage and family remain important life goals and argued that women should continue to pursue them while trusting that the right opportunities will come.
Despite these differing opinions, many agreed that no one should feel forced into a relationship that compromises their peace or dignity.
Tayo Adeniyi's message serves as a reminder that every individual has a unique life journey. Rather than comparing themselves with others or giving in to external pressure, women can choose to build lives filled with purpose, confidence and achievement.
Her advice encourages people to embrace self-love, pursue their dreams and remember that fulfilment can come in many different forms beyond marriage or parenthood.
