Nollywood is set to round off August with one of its biggest and most anticipated productions of the year. Blending history, action, politics and culture, King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos promises to deliver a cinematic experience that celebrates one of the most significant chapters in Lagos' history.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Adebayo Tijani and distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, the historical epic is scheduled to premiere in cinemas nationwide on August 28, 2026. Set in the 1840s and 1850s, the film chronicles the rise and reign of Oba Kosoko, one of Lagos' most influential monarchs, whose leadership was marked by intense political struggles and resistance against foreign influence.

At the heart of the story is Oba Kosoko's determination to defend his kingdom from British colonial expansion.

The film explores the growing tension between indigenous authority and imperial ambition while highlighting the courage, resilience and sacrifices made during a defining period in West African history.

Beyond the external conflict, King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos delves into the complexities of palace politics.

Audiences will witness fierce battles for power within the royal household, shifting alliances, betrayal and the personal ambitions that shaped the future of Lagos.

One of the film's standout features is its commitment to authenticity. Instead of relying heavily on studio sets, the production was filmed across several historic locations in Lagos, including Isale Eko, the cultural heart of the city, as well as Epe and the Lagos Lagoon, where large-scale naval battle sequences were recreated.

The filmmakers also paid close attention to historical accuracy through traditional Yoruba costumes, royal regalia, weapons and period architecture, creating an immersive representation of 19th-century Lagos.

The movie boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring some of Nollywood's finest talents. Leading the production are Odunlade Adekola, Femi Adebayo, Gabriel Afolayan and Prince Jide Kosoko. They are joined by an accomplished supporting cast that includes Tina Mba, Femi Branch, Dele Odule, Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo), Yinka Quadri, Debo Adebayo (Mr Macaroni), Shola Kosoko and Faithia Williams.

With its blend of compelling storytelling, spectacular battle scenes, rich cultural heritage and top-tier performances, King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos is poised to become one of the landmark Yoruba historical films in recent years.

Whether you are passionate about African history or simply looking forward to an epic cinematic adventure, this is a film worth adding to your watchlist.

King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos opens in cinemas nationwide on August 28, 2026. Fans can also watch the official trailer for a first glimpse of the film's breathtaking visuals, elaborate costumes and action-packed sequences ahead of its theatrical release.
