Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti has shared his views on marriage, infidelity and family, stating that he would not end his relationship with his wife if she cheated on him.

The Grammy-nominated musician made the remarks while discussing relationships and the way couples respond when one partner is unfaithful. Kuti suggested that cheating should not automatically lead to the end of a marriage, stressing that he does not consider infidelity significant enough to make him walk away from his wife.

“If my wife cheats on me, I won’t leave her because it doesn’t mean anything,” he said.

The singer’s position challenges the conventional view that infidelity should necessarily result in separation or divorce. While cheating remains a sensitive issue in many relationships, Kuti suggested that couples should be able to deal with such situations without allowing them to completely destroy their unions.

He also criticised what he described as the attitude of some African men towards infidelity. According to Kuti, some men create the impression that cheating is something that cannot happen within a relationship, despite the reality that relationships can experience different challenges.

“African men are forming as if cheating isn’t a normal thing in a relationship,” he said.

His comments have sparked conversations around expectations within marriage and the different ways individuals define commitment, loyalty and forgiveness.

Kuti’s position appears to place greater emphasis on the strength of the relationship beyond sexual exclusivity. By saying he would remain with his wife despite infidelity, he suggested that cheating alone would not be enough to erase the other aspects of a relationship or the bond between two married people.

However, attitudes towards infidelity vary significantly from one couple to another. While some partners may choose forgiveness and reconciliation, others may consider cheating a serious breach of trust that makes continuing the relationship impossible.

The singer did not suggest that every couple should adopt his approach, but rather expressed his personal perspective on how he would handle such a situation in his own marriage.

Beyond his comments about marriage, Kuti also spoke about his family and the person he considers closest to him by blood.

The musician revealed that his sister’s child would be the person he would trust with access to his properties, describing the child as his “real blood”.

“The only person that can have access to my properties is my sister’s child because that’s the real blood,” he said.

His statement about inheritance and family ties added another dimension to the discussion, highlighting his personal view of biological relationships and the people he considers most connected to him.

Kuti comes from one of Nigeria’s most influential musical families. He is the son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and has continued the family’s musical legacy through his own career.

Over the years, Seun Kuti has established himself as a prominent Afrobeat musician, maintaining his father’s distinctive musical tradition while incorporating his own perspectives and contemporary influences.

His public comments on social issues, relationships, politics and culture have also frequently attracted attention, with the singer known for expressing his opinions candidly.

His latest remarks are likely to generate further debate, particularly among Nigerians with differing views about marriage, fidelity and the consequences of cheating.

While some may agree with his willingness to forgive a cheating partner, others may argue that infidelity can cause lasting damage to trust and emotional intimacy.

Ultimately, Kuti’s comments present a personal perspective rather than a universal approach to marriage. His decision to remain with an unfaithful partner, if such a situation were ever to occur, reflects his own understanding of relationships and what he considers important within a marriage.
