Afrobeats star Davido has appealed directly to United States President Donald Trump over the forthcoming Osun State governorship election, urging him and the international community to pay close attention to the poll.

The singer made the appeal on Tuesday, August 11, as political activities intensify ahead of the August 15 election. His intervention comes at a particularly significant time for the Adeleke family, as his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is seeking another term in office.

Davido opened his message by drawing Trump's attention to the situation in the state.
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.”

The singer went on to express concern about the political atmosphere surrounding the election, particularly the possibility of violence and intimidation during the voting process.

“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process. Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear.”

His comments come as the election enters its final stage, with Governor Adeleke facing a number of challengers in his bid to retain the Osun governorship.

Adeleke, who emerged victorious in the 2022 governorship election, is seeking a second term. He is contesting this year's election under the Accord Party, while the All Progressives Congress is fielding Bola Oyebamiji as its candidate. Other candidates are also in the race.

The election has attracted considerable political attention in the state, with concerns over security and the conduct of the poll forming part of the wider conversation ahead of voting day.

For Davido, however, the issue goes beyond party politics. He called on the United States and other members of the international community to pay attention to what happens at the polls and encouraged authorities to make the safety of voters a priority.

“I appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected.”

The singer's appeal is notable not only because of his public profile but also because of his close family relationship with the incumbent governor. Davido, whose real name is David Adedeji Adeleke, is the nephew of Governor Ademola Adeleke and has previously shown support for his uncle's political activities.

As the election draws closer, Davido's message has added his voice to calls for a peaceful and credible exercise. Rather than calling for support for a particular candidate in the statement, he focused his appeal on protecting voters and ensuring that the election is conducted without violence.
He ended his message with a direct call for peace.

“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election.”

Davido is one of Nigeria's leading Afrobeats artistes and has built an international career through his music, performances and collaborations. His intervention in the Osun election has now placed the state's closely watched governorship contest in the spotlight beyond Nigeria.
