A N500 million birthday gift from businessman Obi Cubana to Pastor Jerry Eze has sparked a different kind of conversation, with Daniel Regha questioning whether such an expensive gift was necessary in the first place.
Earlier today, reports emerged that Obi Cubana had presented Pastor Jerry Eze with a luxury house reportedly valued at N500 million as the pastor marked his 44th birthday.
While the gesture may have been intended as a generous birthday present, Regha took a different view of the situation. Rather than focusing on the value of the property or the relationship between the two men, he questioned the need for another luxury home, particularly if Pastor Jerry already has a comfortable place to live.
In his view, the pastor could simply turn down the gift instead of accepting a property of such significant value.
“Pastor Jerry Eze is being gifted a luxury house for what exactly? Let him reject that N500m gift. I believe he already owns a good home and lives comfy, he doesn’t need it, nor should he be accumulating material possessions. This is just the rich enriching their circle,” he wrote.
Regha’s argument goes beyond Pastor Jerry Eze’s personal circumstances. He also raised questions about what N500 million could accomplish if directed towards projects designed to address some of the difficulties faced by ordinary Nigerians.
For him, the amount represents an opportunity to do something that could benefit a much larger number of people rather than being spent on one luxury property.
“If Obi Cubana really cares, he should use the equivalent of that N500m to fund projects that can help Nigerians, again, if he truly cares", he said.
The comments put the focus on the bigger question of what wealthy individuals choose to do with their money. A luxury house can certainly be a meaningful personal gift, but Regha believes that money of that magnitude could have a wider impact if invested in areas such as community development, education, healthcare or other projects that directly serve people.
His position is essentially that generosity should not only be measured by how expensive a gift is, but also by how many lives it can improve.
For Pastor Jerry Eze, the reported gift comes as he celebrates another year and continues his public ministry. For Obi Cubana, the gesture appears to have been a personal way of celebrating someone he considers deserving of such recognition.
Regha, however, is looking at the situation from a different angle. He believes that when a gift is worth N500 million, it is fair to ask whether the same resources could have been put to a more pressing use.
At the centre of his criticism is therefore not simply the house itself, but the decision to spend such a huge amount on a single individual when many Nigerians continue to face serious economic challenges.
Whether the gift remains a personal birthday gesture or becomes a subject of wider debate, Regha has made his position clear: he believes Pastor Jerry Eze should reject the property and that the equivalent amount would be better used to fund projects that can help Nigerians.
