Beauty entrepreneur and former beauty queen Dabota Lawson has broken her silence on her recent fallout with fellow beauty entrepreneur and reality TV personality Adeola Adeyemi, popularly known as Diiadem, explaining why she chose to publicly address the controversy despite advice to remain silent.
Lawson shared her thoughts in a lengthy social media post, where she reflected on friendship, loyalty, boundaries and the importance of defending oneself when faced with what she considers public disrespect.
According to the entrepreneur, several people advised her to ignore the situation because responding could affect her brand, reputation and public image. However, Lawson said she did not believe maintaining a positive image meant accepting behaviour she considered disrespectful.
She explained that the situation was particularly painful because the person involved was someone she considered a friend. Lawson alleged that private conversations were made public, with selected screenshots shared in a way she believed presented a one-sided version of events.
“Love is many things, but in my world, love is not foolishness,” she wrote.
Lawson Defends Her Decision To Respond
Lawson acknowledged that leadership often requires people to exercise restraint and avoid reacting emotionally to every controversy.
However, she argued that there should be a distinction between showing maturity and tolerating disrespect.
“I DID. And I still believe leadership does not mean tolerating disrespect,” she said.
The entrepreneur maintained that she would not allow her name or reputation to be publicly attacked without responding, particularly when she believed the person making the accusations had not clearly explained what she had done wrong.
She said she felt compelled to address the matter because of what she described as the public sharing of private conversations and selective presentation of screenshots.
“If someone I considered a friend chooses to post private conversations publicly, selectively present screenshots or create a narrative intended to embarrass me, while being unable to state what I have actually done to them clearly, I will address it,” Lawson stated.
She added, “You cannot provoke someone and then dictate how they should respond. You cannot throw a bomb and expect a feather in return.”
Public Disrespect Is A Boundary
Lawson went on to explain that people have different limits when it comes to disagreements and relationships.
For her, she said, one of those limits is being publicly disrespected.
“People have different boundaries, and one of mine is PUBLIC DISRESPECT. I can take a lot behind closed doors, but in PUBLIC ???? NO NO NO,” she wrote.
Her comments suggest that while she may be willing to handle certain disagreements privately, she does not intend to remain silent when she believes a personal dispute has been taken into the public space.
The entrepreneur also rejected the idea that her experience should make her avoid friendships, particularly friendships formed in Lagos.
Lawson Defends Her Lagos Friendships
Lawson addressed comments from people who advised her to stay away from friendships in Lagos, saying such advice may be based on their own negative experiences.
She explained that she values friendship and has built meaningful relationships with people who have remained supportive throughout different stages of her life.
“I love deeply. I love friendship. I love family. I love celebrating the people I care about loudly and wholeheartedly because that is how I was raised,” she wrote.
She also pointed to some of her long-standing friendships as evidence that not every relationship she has built in Lagos has been problematic.
According to Lawson, some of her friendships have lasted between 16 and 30 years, demonstrating that she continues to value loyalty and genuine connections.
“People saying ‘avoid Lagos friendships’ are probably speaking from their own experiences or trauma, but I can boldly say I’ve made some really great friends in Lagos who have been God-sent,” she added.
‘I Have No Regrets’
Despite the controversy, Lawson said she has no regrets about defending herself or setting boundaries.
She maintained that people should not be required to explain why they choose to protect their reputation or distance themselves from situations they consider unhealthy.
“I do not need to justify having boundaries. I do not need to justify defending my name, and I have no regrets,” she stated.
Lawson also stressed that love, friendship and loyalty should not be interpreted as an obligation to accept everything silently.
“No version of love, friendship or loyalty requires me to accept bullshit quietly,” she concluded.
The entrepreneur ended her lengthy statement on a positive note, writing, “So, that being said, today is a good day.”
Her comments have now added another perspective to the fallout, with Lawson making it clear that she considers personal boundaries and respect important regardless of the length or history of a friendship.
