Bunmi Nelson Opens Up About Turning Down Funke Akindele’s Opportunity

Nollywood actress Bunmi Nelson has opened up about a career decision she now considers one of her biggest regrets, revealing that she once turned down an opportunity to work closely with popular actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele.

Speaking during an interview on Biola Adebay’s podcast, Nelson recalled a period when Funke Akindele was making movies at her residence in Magodo and regularly encouraged her to become more involved in acting.

According to the actress, Funke Akindele made several attempts to get her to join the movie industry fully. 

However, Bunmi Nelson admitted that she did not recognise the significance of the opportunity at the time and allowed personal reservations to influence her decision.

She explained that she had heard different stories about the Yoruba movie industry, which made her cautious about becoming deeply involved. 

Looking back, she now believes those concerns prevented her from taking advantage of an opportunity that could have changed the direction of her career.

Nelson said Funke Akindele would sometimes call her to come over and participate in movie productions, but she often failed to answer her calls.

 She also recalled that Funke Akindele personally encouraged her to join the industry.

The actress described her attitude at the time as one of pride and judgment, acknowledging that she did not have the maturity or perspective to appreciate what was being offered to her.

She said she now understands that the entertainment industry has grown tremendously and that Akindele's career has reached a level she could not have imagined when they first crossed paths.

For Bunmi Nelson, the experience has become an important lesson about humility, recognising opportunities and avoiding decisions based on assumptions.

She expressed regret over how she handled the situation and apologised to Akindele, while making it clear that she is ready to rebuild that professional connection.

Bunmi Nelson also revealed that she has returned to the movie industry and is open to working with Akindele if the opportunity presents itself again.
