August is shaping up to be a massive month for Nigerian cinema. From sweeping historical epics and mythical fantasy adventures to gripping true crime dramas and stylish urban thrillers, Nollywood is preparing to deliver some of its most ambitious productions of the year.

Whether you're drawn to culturally rich storytelling, star-studded ensemble casts, or edge-of-your-seat thrillers inspired by real events, this month's lineup offers something for every movie lover. Here are five major Nollywood releases you should add to your watchlist this August.

Alahun (The Weaver)

Scheduled to premiere in cinemas nationwide on August 21, 2026, Alahun [The Weaver] is a Yoruba-language fantasy epic directed by Dare Olaitan and produced by Kayode Kasum.

Set in a mythical kingdom where tradition and destiny intertwine, the story begins after the disappearance of a royal princess throws the throne into uncertainty. Rather than relying on a celebrated warrior to restore order, the kingdom's hope rests on an unlikely hero—a gifted weaver whose hidden connection to ancient powers could determine the future of the land.

Blending mythology with Yoruba cultural heritage, the film celebrates indigenous craftsmanship while exploring themes of leadership, legacy, courage, and fate. The impressive cast features Odunlade Adekola, Ibrahim Chatta, Peter Fatomilola, Kunle Remi, Omowunmi Dada, Tope Tedela, Faithia Balogun, Ronke Oshodi Oke, Olarotimi Fakunle, and Tomi Ojo.

Ikenga: The Last Festival

Also arriving on August 21, 2026, Ikenga: The Last Festival is an English-language cultural epic directed by Darlington Obodo Kelechi.

The story unfolds in a community governed by ancestral traditions and sacred customs, where preparations for a historic festival are interrupted by an ambitious figure seeking power through forbidden spiritual forces. As ancient laws are challenged, the community is pushed toward conflict, forcing its people to defend generations of tradition.

The production brings together an outstanding ensemble cast, including Pete Edochie, Patience Ozokwor, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Nkem Owoh, Jide Kene Achufusi, Beverly Osu, Destiny Etiko, Zubby Michael, Ugezu J. Ugezu, and Regina Daniels.

The Night of June 7th

Releasing on August 28, 2026, The Night of June 7th is an English and Igbo-language true crime drama written and produced by Linda Ikeji and directed by Toka McBaror.

Inspired by the tragic Apo Six killings of 2005, the film follows the heartbreaking events surrounding a group of young friends whose night out ended in tragedy. It explores the investigation that followed, the search for justice, and the emotional impact on the victims' families, offering a powerful examination of accountability and abuse of power.

The cast includes Gideon Okeke, Ali Nuhu, Femi Branch, Charles Lenny, Chikamma R.C., Nuradeen Mc Khalifa, Peter Inyang, Justin Ben, Promise Agbor, and April Chidinma.

King Kosoko

Opening in cinemas on August 28, 2026, King Kosoko is a Yoruba-language historical biography directed by Adebayo Tijani.

The film chronicles the reign of Oba Kosoko during one of the most turbulent periods in Lagos history. Set in the 19th century, the story explores royal succession battles, political rivalries, foreign intervention, and the historic events that shaped the future of Lagos. Through large-scale production design and detailed historical recreation, the film brings one of Nigeria's most significant historical figures to life.

Leading the cast are Femi Adebayo, Gabriel Afolayan, Odunlade Adekola, Tina Mba, Aisha Lawal, Jide Kosoko, Sola Kosoko, Femi Branch, Adeniyi Johnson, and Kola Ajeyemi.

Abujaa

Completing the lineup is Abujaa, which also arrives in cinemas on August 21, 2026.

Unlike the historical and fantasy productions dominating this month's releases, Abujaa is a contemporary urban drama and political thriller set in Nigeria's capital city. The story explores the complex intersections of politics, business, ambition, and personal survival as powerful individuals navigate a world where influence, betrayal, and hidden agendas shape every decision.

With its modern setting, stylish cinematography, and fast-paced storytelling, the film offers audiences a gripping look at life behind the polished image of Abuja while delivering an engaging thriller filled with suspense and intrigue.

August is shaping up to be one of the biggest months for Nollywood in 2026, with filmmakers delivering an exciting mix of fantasy, history, culture, crime, and contemporary drama.

Whether you're eager to witness the mythical adventure of Alahun (The Weaver), the cultural richness of Ikenga: The Last Festival, the historical grandeur of King Kosoko, the emotional weight of The Night of June 7th, or the modern intrigue of Abujaa, there's no shortage of compelling stories arriving on the big screen.
