A fresh debate has erupted among Nollywood fans after film critic and broadcaster Tolu Fagbure, popularly known as Afin, declared that Wumi Toriola is a better actress than some of the industry's most celebrated female stars, including Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham and Mercy Aigbe.
His remarks have generated widespread reactions across social media, with supporters and critics offering contrasting opinions on what truly defines greatness in Nollywood.
While some agreed with his assessment of Toriola's acting abilities, others argued that the careers of Akindele, Abraham and Aigbe cannot be overlooked because of their remarkable achievements both on and off the screen.
Fagbure made the comments during a podcast interview where he praised Wumi Toriola's acting range and described her as one of the finest performers in the industry.
According to him, her performances display emotional depth, authenticity and consistency that set her apart from many of her contemporaries.
He also referenced Toriola's 2024 cinema movie Queen Lateefah, pointing to its production quality as another reason for his admiration.
Fagbure commended the actress for entrusting filmmaker Judith Audu with the production of the project instead of taking on every responsibility herself. In his view, recognising the need for experienced collaborators demonstrated professionalism and good judgment.
The comments quickly became one of the most discussed entertainment topics online, with fans dissecting the strengths of each actress.
Many supporters of Wumi Toriola argued that she has consistently delivered outstanding performances in Yoruba and English-language productions. While some believe natural acting talent should be the deciding factor, others insist that awards, longevity, filmmaking skills, commercial success and overall impact on the industry deserve equal consideration.
Although none of the actresses mentioned has publicly responded to Fagbure's comments, the debate has once again shown how passionate Nollywood audiences are about their favourite stars.
