Actress Biola Adebayo has expressed frustration over what she describes as the conflicting expectations many Nigerians place on her whenever she uses her platform to support people facing difficult situations.
The actress said she has reached a point where she genuinely does not know what people want from her, explaining that every attempt to help someone is often followed by criticism, even when her intentions are good.
Reflecting on some of the incidents that have attracted public attention, Biola recalled the period when she featured singer Busola Oke on her platform after the singer disclosed that she had been battling suicidal thoughts. At the time, the actress hoped the exposure would encourage well-meaning Nigerians to come to Busola's aid.
Instead, she said, the gesture was met with harsh criticism. According to Biola, many people questioned why Busola should receive financial assistance, arguing that she was capable of working to earn a living. Others accused the actress of repeatedly asking members of the public to solve people's problems simply because they followed her page.
The actress said she recently found herself facing another round of criticism after agreeing to help a woman who wanted to sell her property in order to settle outstanding debts. Rather than advertising the woman's bank account for donations, Biola chose to publicise the property so it could be sold and the proceeds used to pay those she owed.
However, she said many people turned against her once again, asking why she did not simply post the woman's account details and allow Nigerians to contribute money instead.
For Biola, the reactions have been difficult to understand because they appear to contradict the criticisms she previously received over the Busola Oke situation. She questioned why the same action that was condemned months ago is now being demanded by many of the same people.
The actress also referred to another controversy involving a young woman who publicly apologised to her grandmother after attacking her with a pestle and leaving her unconscious. While Biola believed giving the young woman an opportunity to apologise was the right thing to do, she said some people still found fault with her decision.
According to her, some critics argued that the grandmother also shared responsibility for what happened and therefore should not have been apologised to publicly.
Clearly exhausted by the constant backlash, Biola appealed to Nigerians to stop directing every criticism at her whenever she chooses to assist someone.
She said:
"Hmm...🙆♂️😭 What do Nigerians really want from me? A few months ago I brought singer Busola Oke to my platform when she was feeling suicidal so people could help her. Unfortunately, I received a lot of backlash from Nigerians.
"They kept dragging me and asking what happened to Busola Oke's hands and legs that she couldn't work. Some even said I had started taking them for granted just because they were watching me.
"A few days ago I brought this lady who said she was owing some people money to my platform. She asked me to help her post the property she wanted to sell so she could pay her debts.
"Now I have seen lots of people dragging me again, asking why I couldn't help her by posting her account details for Nigerians to support her.
"I am so confused at this point. They were the same people who condemned me when I did it for Busola Oke, and they are still the same people asking me to do it for this new woman.
"A few weeks ago I posted a young lady apologising to her grandmother because she used a pestle to hit her grandmother on the head until she fainted.
"Lots of people still dragged me. Some even said I shouldn't have allowed her to apologise because her grandmother was also at fault. Really?
"Kí ló fa àwọn ìwà wèrè báyìí? Please, you guys should leave me alone. If you want to help that woman, come and take her account details and stop dragging me."
Her statement reflect her frustration with what she believes are inconsistent expectations from members of the public, insisting that regardless of the approach she takes, she still ends up being criticised.
