Nollywood actress Biola Fowosere has shared the emotional story of how the collapse of her marriage pushed her into depression, revealing that she spent nearly two years receiving treatment after her former husband allegedly abandoned her and their children.
The Yoruba movie star made the revelation during an interview on African A List, where she spoke openly about one of the most painful periods of her life.
Fowosere said the end of her marriage left her emotionally devastated, adding that she still struggles to understand why her former husband suddenly walked away without giving any explanation.
According to the actress, the unanswered questions surrounding the separation remain one of the most difficult aspects of her experience.
Actress Says She Never Got An Explanation
Reflecting on the breakdown of the marriage, Fowosere said the one person she wishes she could question is her former husband.
She explained that despite repeatedly thinking about what might have gone wrong, she has never been able to identify any reason that justified his decision to leave the family.
“The only person I’d really want to ask a question is my ex-husband. I’d really like to ask him what I did wrong because I did nothing before he left me and the kids. I want to ask what my children and I did to deserve what he did to us,” she said.
The actress admitted that the unanswered questions have remained with her over the years, particularly because she believes neither she nor her children deserved to experience such a painful situation.
Depression Took A Heavy Toll
Fowosere disclosed that the emotional trauma eventually developed into severe depression, significantly affecting her mental health.
According to the actress, the condition became so serious that she required extended medical treatment while trying to recover emotionally.
“I spent one year and six months in the hospital battling depression after he left. I almost ran mad. We are not in contact. Since he left, we haven’t seen him. He blocked us seven years ago,” she added.
She explained that the lengthy hospital stay became necessary because she found it extremely difficult to cope with the emotional impact of the separation and the responsibility of caring for her children alone.
Years Without Contact
Beyond leaving the family, Fowosere revealed that her former husband allegedly cut off all communication with them.
She said neither she nor their children has had any form of contact with him since he reportedly blocked them seven years ago.
According to the actress, he has neither visited the children nor attempted to reconnect with the family during that period.
The prolonged silence, she noted, has made it impossible for the children to understand why their father disappeared from their lives.
Despite the years that have passed, she said the family continues to live without answers regarding his decision.
Speaking Out About Mental Health
By sharing her experience publicly, Fowosere joins a growing number of Nigerian entertainers who have opened up about mental health challenges.
Depression remains one of the least discussed health conditions in many communities, with numerous people often struggling in silence because of fear, stigma or misunderstanding.
The actress’s account highlights how emotional trauma, particularly following the breakdown of close relationships, can have serious consequences for mental wellbeing.
Her willingness to discuss her experience may encourage others facing similar situations to seek professional help and emotional support when needed.
Finding Strength After Pain
Although she described the experience as one of the darkest periods of her life, Fowosere has gradually rebuilt her career and continued working in the Yoruba movie industry.
Her return to acting reflects a determination to move forward despite the emotional challenges she faced.
The actress also continues to focus on raising her children, even as she admits that the unanswered questions surrounding the end of her marriage remain with her.
While she may never receive the explanation she desires, her story stands as a reminder of the emotional resilience required to overcome personal tragedy.
Today, Biola Fowosere’s journey represents not only survival after heartbreak but also the importance of speaking honestly about mental health, family struggles and the healing process that follows life’s most painful experiences.
