Tomi Adeyemi Opens Up on Difficult Experience Behind Children of Blood and Bone Film Adaptation

Bestselling Nigerian-American author Tomi Adeyemi has publicly shared the emotional challenges she faced while working on the film adaptation of her acclaimed fantasy novel, Children of Blood and Bone. 

In a heartfelt video posted online, the writer revealed that the production process became one of the most painful experiences of her life, despite the excitement surrounding the highly anticipated movie.

Adeyemi explained that she had remained silent for over a year, hoping issues behind the scenes would be resolved privately.

 According to her, she repeatedly raised concerns with senior members of the production team but felt her complaints were ignored. Instead of finding solutions, she claimed the situation became increasingly difficult, leaving her emotionally drained throughout the filmmaking process.

The author, who also contributed to the screenplay alongside director Gina Prince-Bythewood, described leaving the film set in tears and struggling with severe emotional stress after returning home. She disclosed that the experience led to panic attacks and physical distress, making it impossible for her to even imagine watching the completed film when it is released.

Her comments surfaced shortly after the release of the film's first official trailer, prompting renewed attention to reports of tension surrounding the production. 

Although Adeyemi declined to reveal specific details about the conflicts or identify individuals involved, she emphasized that speaking publicly became necessary after remaining silent for so long.

The adaptation has also attracted discussion over casting decisions, particularly involving actress Amandla Stenberg, who previously addressed criticism surrounding her role in the film. 

However, Adeyemi chose not to elaborate on any personal disagreements, insisting her priority is to move forward from the experience.

Despite the controversy, Children of Blood and Bone remains one of the most anticipated fantasy films in recent years. Inspired by Yoruba mythology, the story features an impressive international cast, including Thuso Mbedu, Damson Idris, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Regina King, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Tosin Cole, Richard Mofe-Damijo and Amandla Stenberg.

The film's soundtrack is being overseen by Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems, who serves as executive music producer. Scheduled for release in cinemas and IMAX on January 15, 2027, the project continues to generate global anticipation. 

However, Adeyemi's revelations have shifted some attention away from the fantasy adventure itself and toward the creative struggles that unfolded behind the scenes, sparking conversations about the treatment of authors during major Hollywood adaptations.
