"Money doesn't change people, it just reveal who the person is."
That was the point Toke Makinwa made as she reflected on relationships, loyalty and what happens when success finally comes.
There is a belief that dating within your age and social class can save people from a lot of unnecessary heartbreak. The idea is that when two people are building from the same place, they understand each other's struggles and are more likely to grow together without unrealistic expectations.
The reality, however, is that life doesn't always play out that way.
There are women who stay through the hard times. They encourage their partners when things are difficult, contribute financially when necessary and even make dinner with their own money when there isn't enough. They believe in the relationship and keep showing up, hoping the sacrifices will one day be worth it.
But sometimes, when success finally arrives, everything changes. The same woman who stood by him during the struggle suddenly becomes easy to overlook. Instead, some men begin chasing women whose lifestyle they cannot even afford to keep up with.
It is that situation Toke Makinwa was referring to when she said:
"Heaven forbid you end up with a guy who hasn’t blown. The day he blows that is when you will know his true personality. And that scares women. Money doesn’t change people, it just reveal who the person is. So many men are treating women who sacrificed everything for them badly."
Whether people agree with her or not, her words speak to a question that comes up whenever stories like these are shared. Does money really change people, or does it simply remove the limits and reveal the kind of person they have always been? For many, the answer is found in how someone treats the people who stood by them long before success arrived.
For many people, stories like these are never really about money. They are about loyalty, appreciation and remembering the people who stayed when life was uncertain. Success may change a person's circumstances, but how they treat those who supported them often says the most about their character.
Whether people agree with Toke Makinwa's view or not, her comments have once again put the spotlight on a question many couples ask themselves: when life finally gets better, will love and loyalty remain the same, or will success reveal a completely different side of someone?
