Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, popularly known as Portable, has sparked fresh debate in the entertainment industry after criticizing some of Nigeria’s biggest music exports over the direction of their songs.

The street-pop artiste, widely known for his energetic delivery and outspoken personality, claimed that leading stars such as Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy and Olamide have shifted away from spiritually conscious and motivational content in their music. According to him, the focus of modern hit songs has increasingly tilted toward luxury lifestyles, women, fame, and material success rather than messages that reflect gratitude to God or the struggles of everyday people.

Portable expressed concern that this change has reduced the inspirational value of mainstream Afrobeats and street music, leaving listeners with songs he believes lack depth and moral direction. He argued that music should not only entertain but also serve as a source of reflection, guidance, and spiritual awareness for society.

In the video broadcast, he specifically mentioned some of the biggest names in the industry, insisting that their current lifestyle and success may have distanced them from the realities of ordinary Nigerians. He suggested that this disconnect is reflected in their lyrics and overall message.

According to Portable, the absence of religious or conscious themes in their songs is troubling, especially considering their influence on younger listeners. He claimed that instead of promoting balance and inspiration, many popular songs now focus mainly on partying, relationships, and wealth display.

He said: “I noticed that Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Olamide don’t praise God in their songs, they only sing about ladies. Is it because they already have money and they believe they can’t fall? Their songs have no motivation. No sensible lyrics. Just women and vanity.”

His comments quickly generated reactions online, with fans divided between those who agreed with his perspective and others who felt his criticism ignored the creative freedom and global evolution of Afrobeats. Some argued that modern Nigerian music still carries messages of struggle and gratitude, but in less direct or traditional forms than earlier generations of artistes.

Portable also used the moment to call for a return to more conscious music, urging artists to include more spiritually uplifting and socially relevant messages in their work. He stressed that success should not lead musicians to abandon meaningful content, adding that music remains a powerful tool for shaping values and influencing society.

“Make conscious music. We are tired of all those songs about frivolities. I am also a musician. You all should do better,” he added.

The singer, known for frequently making bold and sometimes controversial statements about the music industry, has continued to maintain his presence in public conversations despite mixed reactions to his opinions.

His latest remarks have once again reignited discussion about the direction of Afrobeats, the balance between entertainment and message-driven music, and whether Nigerian artistes are moving away from the socially conscious roots that once defined parts of the industry.
