Nollywood actress and producer Esther Okereke has opened up about her decision to contest Nigeria's presidency in the 2027 general election, saying her years of humanitarian work exposed deep societal challenges that convinced her meaningful change must begin at the highest level of leadership.

According to the National Rescue Movement (NRM) presidential candidate, her experience supporting vulnerable groups, including inmates, pensioners and security personnel, made her realize that charity alone cannot solve the country's long-standing problems.

She believes government policies and effective leadership are the keys to creating lasting improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

Okereke explained that while her foundation has provided assistance to many people over the years, limited resources and the absence of institutional support highlighted the need for broader reforms.

Rather than continuing to address individual cases, she said she decided to pursue public office with the aim of tackling the root causes of the nation's challenges.

Addressing concerns about gender in politics, the actress maintained that leadership should be based on competence, vision and courage rather than gender.

She argued that more women should be willing to seek leadership positions, insisting that fear and hesitation have discouraged many capable women from participating actively in governance.

As part of her campaign, Okereke unveiled what she describes as the E.S.T.H.E.R. agenda, a policy framework focused on improving electricity supply, strengthening education, enhancing national security, promoting technology, expanding healthcare services, supporting businesses and driving economic development.

She also emphasized the importance of national recovery through accountability and institutional reforms.

The actress further highlighted the need to process Nigeria's natural resources locally instead of exporting raw materials, arguing that such an approach would create jobs, stimulate industrial growth and increase national revenue.

Speaking on the entertainment industry, Okereke stressed that Nollywood has enormous economic potential if supported with better infrastructure.

She advocated investments in modern film studios, stable electricity, stronger copyright enforcement and affordable financing for filmmakers.

According to her, easier access to low-interest loans would enable producers to create more competitive projects capable of generating employment and boosting the country's economy.

She also outlined her vision for sports development, calling for a more business-oriented approach to managing the sector. Drawing from her experience as a football club owner, she suggested greater private sector involvement, financial transparency and increased investment in grassroots talent development.

Okereke cited former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew as leaders whose styles have inspired her political philosophy. She believes their examples demonstrate the importance of bold leadership and long-term planning.

Having secured the NRM presidential ticket, the actress says she is determined to convince Nigerians that effective leadership, institutional reforms and practical policies can set the country on a path toward sustainable development ahead of the 2027 elections.
