Ghanaian dancehall heavyweight Shatta Wale says being born into a politically connected family has shaped the way many people view his success, with some quick to describe him as a "nepo baby."

Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast with Daddy Freeze, the award-winning musician explained that his father's career in politics has long influenced public perception of him, even though he chose a completely different path for his life.

According to the "On God" hitmaker, it is common in Ghana for children of politicians to be seen as beneficiaries of their parents' status, and he believes that assumption is what has followed him throughout his career.

Rather than shy away from his background, Shatta Wale openly acknowledged that he grew up in a wealthy home. He recalled enjoying privileges that many people never had, including access to expensive cars, international travel and a comfortable lifestyle from a young age.

Despite those advantages, he insisted that his achievements in music were earned through his own efforts and not handed to him because of his family's influence. While he could have chosen to follow in his father's footsteps, he said music became the road he wanted to build for himself.

"I am a dadabee," Shatta Wale said, embracing the Ghanaian expression commonly used to describe someone from a wealthy family. He, however, maintained that his family background should not take away from the work he has put into becoming one of Africa's biggest dancehall stars.

The singer also threw a challenge to fellow Ghanaian celebrities, encouraging them to be open about what their parents do for a living. In his view, many public figures also come from influential or financially comfortable families, but those conversations are rarely had in public.

Away from music, Shatta Wale revealed that his childhood dreams were much broader than entertainment. He said he once imagined himself becoming a pilot, a lawyer or even the president of Ghana.

"I wanted to be... Pilot, lawyer and President," he said.

Although music eventually became his calling, he admitted that politics has never been far from his mind because of his upbringing.

"For politics, it's in my bl00d," he said, explaining why he has occasionally spoken about the possibility of venturing into public office in the future.

For now, however, the award-winning performer says his attention remains on making music and continuing to lead the Shatta Movement, the loyal fan base that has stood behind him throughout his career.

Shatta Wale's comments have once again drawn attention to the conversation around privilege and success. While having access to opportunities can create a head start, he believes it does not automatically guarantee accomplishments, insisting that he still had to carve out his own identity in Ghana's highly competitive music industry.

Over the years, the outspoken artiste has built a reputation for speaking his mind on issues affecting entertainment and society. This latest conversation offers another glimpse into his upbringing, ambitions and why he believes people should look beyond family background before judging an individual's achievements.
