Nollywood actress and filmmaker Iyabo Ojo has raised concerns over the alleged unauthorized broadcast of her latest movie, The Memory of You, by a television station in Ghana, describing the incident as a serious setback for filmmakers who invest heavily in movie production.
The actress revealed that she was surprised to discover that the film was reportedly being aired on North East TV shortly after its official release.
According to her, the development came less than a day after the concluding part of the movie became available to the public, prompting her to question how the station obtained the rights to show it.
Expressing her frustration, Ojo said filmmaking requires enormous financial and personal commitment. She noted that producers spend millions of naira covering expenses such as actors' fees, filming locations, costumes, accommodation, transportation, catering, and post-production before a project is ready for release.
She argued that unauthorized broadcasts undermine those efforts and reduce the returns creators deserve from their investments.
The actress also suggested that the issue may be more widespread than many people realize. She explained that she had previously heard similar complaints from other Nigerian filmmakers but had not fully appreciated the scale of the problem until it affected one of her own productions.
According to Ojo, piracy continues to threaten the growth of the Nigerian film industry by discouraging producers from investing in high-quality projects.
She stressed that creative works should be respected and that anyone wishing to distribute or broadcast a film should first obtain the necessary authorization from the copyright holders.
In her appeal, the filmmaker called on the appropriate authorities in Ghana to investigate the alleged incident and strengthen measures against copyright infringement.
She specifically urged agencies responsible for regulating the country's film and creative industries to ensure that intellectual property rights are protected and respected.
Ojo also appealed to the Ghanaian government to support efforts aimed at fostering a fair environment for filmmakers across Africa.
She maintained that stronger collaboration between regulatory bodies in different countries would help curb piracy and encourage legitimate distribution of films.
The actress further warned that none of her productions, including The Memory of You, should be broadcast, reproduced, or distributed without her approval.
She insisted that creators deserve to benefit from the commercial success of their work rather than see it exploited without consent.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the persistent challenge of movie piracy within the African entertainment industry.
Industry stakeholders have repeatedly emphasized that tackling copyright violations is essential to protecting creative talent, attracting investment, and ensuring the continued growth of Nollywood and other film industries across the continent.
