I Never Regretted Leaving Nollywood for My Family — Maureen Solomon

Veteran Nollywood actress Maureen Solomon has opened up about one of the biggest decisions of her career, revealing that she has never regretted putting acting on hold to dedicate more time to raising her children.

Speaking during a recent television interview, the actress explained that balancing the demands of filmmaking with motherhood became increasingly difficult after the birth of her second child. 

While she was initially able to combine work with caring for her first child, the responsibilities eventually became too overwhelming, forcing her to reassess her priorities.

According to Solomon, choosing her family over a flourishing acting career was not an easy decision, but it was one she believed would benefit her children in the long run. 

She maintained that the presence and involvement of parents play a crucial role in a child's development, adding that she was determined to be actively involved in their upbringing.

The actress noted that although she had domestic assistants to help with childcare, she realised there were aspects of parenting that could not be delegated to anyone else. This conviction led her to temporarily step away from the movie industry at the peak of her popularity.

Now back in Nollywood, Solomon says returning to acting has been much easier because her older children have grown into independent adults. 

She also pointed out that she kept herself informed about developments within the industry throughout her break, making it easier to adapt to changes such as the rise of streaming platforms, digital distribution and cinema productions.

Reflecting on how her acting journey began, Solomon revealed that she never planned to become an actress. 

She recalled accompanying her elder sister to a hotel, where a movie audition was taking place. Encouraged to read a script, she impressed the casting team and was eventually selected, marking the beginning of a successful career in Nollywood.

The actress also shared her thoughts on the growing influence of social media in the entertainment industry. 

She argued that an actor's talent and contribution should not be judged solely by the size of their online following, insisting that genuine ability and consistency remain the true measures of success.

Maureen Solomon became a household name in the early 2000s after starring in several popular Nollywood productions. Her performances earned her recognition as one of the industry's promising talents before she chose to focus on family life.

Today, she says she is grateful for the path she chose, believing that while careers can be rebuilt, the opportunity to be present during a child's formative years cannot be replaced. Her story serves as a reminder that personal success is often defined by individual values rather than public expectations.
