Content creator Emmanuel Obruste, popularly known as GehGeh, has responded to widespread criticism following the circulation of videos showing him at what appeared to be a traditional wedding ceremony, insisting that he has never advised Nigerians against getting married.
The social media personality became a trending topic after posting clips from the colourful event on his X account over the weekend. In the videos, GehGeh was seen dressed in a matching burgundy traditional outfit alongside a woman, prompting many followers to speculate that he had secretly tied the knot.
The content creator wore a flowing agbada paired with black bead necklaces, while the woman was also dressed in coordinated traditional attire, giving the impression that they were the bride and groom.
Adding to the speculation, an invitation card featured in one of the videos listed the couple’s names as Mary and Prosper, with the ceremony scheduled to take place on July 26 at 11 a.m.
As the clips spread across social media, many users assumed GehGeh had finally abandoned the relationship views he frequently shares online.
However, the content creator quickly suggested there was more to the story.
In one of his posts, he hinted that he was merely standing in for someone else rather than getting married himself.
“So I no fit represent my brother wey dey abroad?” he wrote.
Despite the explanation, the speculation continued after additional videos surfaced showing the woman carrying out the traditional first-feeding rite, a symbolic part of many Nigerian traditional marriage ceremonies.
The footage further fuelled conversations across social media platforms, with many users debating whether the ceremony was genuine or another piece of content designed to generate engagement.
Several critics accused GehGeh of contradicting the opinions he has built his online brand around.
Known for offering financial advice, relationship commentary and discussions targeted mainly at young men, GehGeh has often attracted attention for his outspoken views on dating, marriage and financial responsibility.
His critics argued that participating in a traditional wedding appeared inconsistent with the opinions he frequently expresses in his online videos.
Among those who reacted was fellow content creator Carter Efe, who claimed GehGeh’s advice had contributed to the collapse of his own long-term relationship.
According to Carter Efe, following such advice came at a personal cost after spending over a decade in a relationship.
Another social media commentator, Tunde Perry, also weighed in, describing GehGeh as someone whose opinions should not be trusted.
The reactions quickly generated thousands of comments, with supporters and critics divided over whether the wedding was real or simply another content strategy.
Breaking his silence, GehGeh firmly denied allegations that he had ever discouraged people from getting married.
He challenged critics to produce evidence proving he had made such statements.
“I never for once told y’all not to get married. Did I? If yes, show me a video of me telling you not to marry,” he wrote.
The content creator also used the opportunity to speak about social media, arguing that many Nigerians misunderstand how online platforms work.
According to him, content creation often requires creativity and strategy, suggesting that many viral moments are designed to spark conversations and increase engagement.
“Nigerians really don’t understand how social media works. If you know how to use it properly, you will never lack,” he added.
The latest controversy comes shortly after GehGeh made another personal revelation during an interview, where he disclosed details about his family life.
The content creator claimed he currently has four baby mothers and revealed that he is expecting children with two more women, a statement that also generated widespread reactions online.
Although the authenticity of the wedding ceremony remains unclear, the incident has once again demonstrated GehGeh’s ability to dominate conversations across Nigerian social media.
Whether the event was genuine, symbolic or simply content for entertainment purposes, it has succeeded in generating debate about marriage, public perception and the influence of online personalities.
For now, GehGeh maintains that he has never advised anyone against marriage, insisting that critics should verify his past statements before drawing conclusions from viral social media content.
