The family of renowned Nigerian actor, theatre practitioner, and academic, Chief (Dr.) Gabriel Adekola Benedict Oyewo, popularly known as Kola Oyewo, has released the official programme for his final burial ceremonies.

The respected performer, whose contributions to the Nigerian entertainment industry and theatre education earned him widespread admiration, passed away on June 12, 2026, at the age of 80.

According to the family, the funeral activities will begin on Wednesday, August 5, and conclude on Friday, August 7, with a series of religious services, cultural tributes, and private burial rites designed to celebrate his remarkable life and enduring legacy.

The opening event will be a wake-keep and service of songs, where family members, friends, colleagues, students, and admirers are expected to gather in Ile-Ife to pay their final respects.

The solemn gathering will provide an opportunity for loved ones to reflect on the actor's life, achievements, and decades of service to the performing arts.

The second day of the funeral programme will feature a funeral mass alongside several events dedicated to honouring Oyewo's impact on Nigerian theatre.

A special tribute session is expected to bring together actors, directors, scholars, and cultural enthusiasts who worked with him throughout his long career.

Guests will also witness cultural performances celebrating Yoruba heritage, a tradition that played a significant role in many of his artistic works.

An exhibition showcasing photographs, publications, costumes, and selected works associated with the late actor will also form part of the memorial activities.

Organisers say the exhibition is intended to highlight his journey as a performer, educator, and mentor whose influence extended beyond the stage into academic circles.

The final day of the ceremonies will begin with a motorcade transporting his remains to his hometown, where traditional and religious rites will be observed before his burial.

A requiem mass will precede the interment, which will be attended by close family members and invited guests. The funeral programme will conclude with a reception where sympathisers, colleagues, and well-wishers will celebrate his life and remarkable accomplishments.

Born on March 26, 1946, Kola Oyewo devoted much of his life to promoting theatre arts and preserving Yoruba culture through acting, teaching, and research.

He studied dramatic arts and Yoruba oral literature before later earning a degree in Theatre Arts, strengthening his reputation as both a gifted performer and respected academic.

Throughout his career, Oyewo inspired generations of actors through his dedication to education and mentorship. Many former students and colleagues have described him as a disciplined professional whose passion for storytelling helped shape modern Nigerian theatre.

His passing has prompted tributes from across the entertainment industry, with actors, filmmakers, academics, and cultural organisations remembering him as a pioneer who made lasting contributions to stage productions, television, and theatre education.

Beyond his performances, he will be remembered for his commitment to nurturing young talents and preserving Nigeria's rich cultural traditions.

As family, friends, and admirers prepare to gather for the funeral ceremonies, many believe the events will not only honour a respected actor but also celebrate a lifetime dedicated to advancing the Nigerian creative industry.

His legacy is expected to continue inspiring future generations of performers and scholars for many years to come.
