Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has shared his thoughts on what people should really look for when choosing a life partner, saying that character should always take priority over outward qualities or personal status.

In a message about relationships and marriage, the respected actor encouraged both men and women to look beyond qualities that are often celebrated in society and instead focus on values that can sustain a lifelong union. According to him, while virginity may be seen as something honorable, it should never be treated as proof that someone will make a good husband or wife.

He explained that many people mistakenly assume that preserving one's virginity automatically makes a woman suitable for marriage, but he believes that such thinking ignores the qualities that truly determine whether a relationship will thrive.

Sharing his perspective, Agu said:

“Keeping your virg!nity does not automatically make you wife material. Don’t marry a woman simply because she is a v!rg!n, and vice versa.

V&rg!n!ty signifies purity, not loyalty, good character, emotional intelligence or emotional maturity.

The same thing applies to women. Don’t marry a man simply because he is a virg!n, handsome, wealthy or successful.

For the sake of your life, peace, happiness and sanity, choose someone whose character has been tested and proven. Ask questions oo.

Marry someone who genuinely connects with you, someone who is kind, respectful, loving, emotionally mature and committed to building a healthy relationship.

If you find a partner who is a virg!n and also loyal, kind, emotionally mature, respectful, of good character and God-fearing, then you are truly fortunate in life.

But remember, character is the foundation of a lasting marriage. Everything else is secondary."

The veteran actor stressed that his advice applies equally to both men and women. In his view, qualities such as physical appearance, financial success or even sexual purity should never become the main basis for choosing a spouse. While those attributes may be appreciated, they cannot replace honesty, kindness, respect, emotional maturity and commitment when it comes to building a peaceful home.

He also encouraged people to take their time before making such an important decision. Rather than rushing into marriage because of one admirable quality, he advised prospective couples to observe how their partners treat others, handle difficult situations and demonstrate consistency over time.

According to Agu, a successful marriage depends on more than first impressions or popular expectations. Trust, mutual respect, genuine love and proven character remain the qualities that help couples navigate life's challenges together.

His message is a  reflection  that lasting relationships are built on a solid foundation of values and personal integrity. While every individual may have personal preferences when choosing a partner, Agu believes that character remains the most reliable measure of someone who is truly ready for marriage, describing it as the foundation upon which every enduring union should stand.
