Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr is preparing to make her highly anticipated Hollywood acting debut in the upcoming fantasy epic Children Of Blood And Bone, joining an impressive cast that includes Idris Elba, Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Cynthia Erivo, Damson Idris, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Regina King.
The big-budget production, which is currently filming in South Africa, is based on the internationally acclaimed fantasy novel of the same name by Nigerian-American author Tomi Adeyemi. Inspired by Yoruba mythology, the story transports audiences into the magical kingdom of Orisha, where a young heroine embarks on a dangerous mission to restore the magic stolen from her people.

A Landmark Project For The African Diaspora
Director Gina Prince-Bythewood recently shared behind-the-scenes footage from the set on Instagram, describing the production as much more than just another fantasy film.
According to the acclaimed filmmaker, one of her biggest ambitions was to create a project that celebrates African culture while bringing together talented people from across the global African diaspora.
“I wanted to create a world that we can be inspired by. I wanted the whole diaspora to be able to be part of this. It is just going to be so big and beautiful,” Prince-Bythewood said.
She praised the atmosphere on set, explaining that the cast and crew have embraced the project with love, respect and passion.
“We do it together. That is definitely the vibe that I have been feeling from everybody. We just want to do it with love and respect and passion.”
Prince-Bythewood also expressed excitement about shooting the film in South Africa, describing the country as an extraordinary location capable of bringing the fictional kingdom of Orisha to life.
A Story Rooted In Yoruba Mythology
Children Of Blood And Bone follows Zelie, a courageous young woman determined to restore magic after it was violently stripped from her people.
Set in the mythical kingdom of Orisha, the story explores themes of courage, oppression, identity, hope and resistance while drawing heavily from Yoruba spirituality and cultural traditions.
Since its publication, Tomi Adeyemi’s novel has become a global bestseller, earning praise for introducing African mythology to mainstream fantasy audiences and inspiring millions of readers worldwide.
The film adaptation is expected to remain faithful to those cultural roots while delivering spectacular visual effects and large-scale action sequences.
An All-Star Cast
Beyond Ayra Starr’s debut, the film boasts one of the strongest ensemble casts assembled for a fantasy production in recent years.
South African actress Thuso Mbedu, who plays the lead role of Zelie, described the movie as an ambitious production unlike anything she has worked on before.
British actor Idris Elba praised South Africa’s breathtaking scenery, saying the country provides an ideal backdrop for bringing the fantasy world to life.

Attention To African Authenticity
The production team has placed significant emphasis on cultural authenticity throughout the filmmaking process.
Production designer Hannah Beachler explained that the goal was to build a world that feels immersive and emotionally real for audiences.
“We wanted the world to feel visceral for the audience,” she said.
Hair designer Andrea Mona Bowman revealed that every natural hair texture was intentionally represented throughout the film to reflect the diversity of African beauty.
“I did not leave any texture untapped,” she explained.
Meanwhile, makeup designer Matiki Anoff disclosed that the body art created for many of the characters draws direct inspiration from traditional Yoruba cultural practices, adding another layer of authenticity to the fantasy universe.
Ayra Starr Continues Her Global Rise
Ayra Starr has rapidly become one of Africa’s biggest music exports, earning international recognition through chart-topping songs, sold-out tours and award nominations.
Her appearance in Children Of Blood And Bone signals another significant step in her global career, placing her alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood.
For many fans, her acting debut represents another example of Nigerian entertainers increasingly crossing into major international film productions while showcasing African stories on the global stage.
