Actress and art curator Chidera Adiele has made an emotional public appeal for assistance as her family continues to battle the challenges of caring for her younger brother, who has reportedly struggled with drug addiction and mental health issues for several years.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Adiele explained that her brother's condition began shortly after he gained admission into the University of Lagos.
What initially appeared to be a difficult period gradually developed into a prolonged crisis that has affected every aspect of their family's life.
According to the actress, her brother has undergone treatment at multiple psychiatric facilities across Nigeria in an effort to help him recover.
Despite years of medical attention, counseling and other interventions, she said there has been little lasting improvement, leaving the family emotionally and financially exhausted.
Adiele revealed that she has personally taken on much of the responsibility for her brother's care, often coordinating his medical appointments, hospital admissions and daily needs.
She admitted that the burden has become overwhelming, especially as she also tries to care for her own daughter and maintain her career.
The actress disclosed that concerns about her daughter's safety previously forced her to move out of the family home.
However, circumstances changed after her parents lost their accommodation, resulting in the family moving back into her residence. She said the arrangement has increased pressure on everyone involved and made it more difficult to maintain stability at home.
Beyond the financial strain, Adiele spoke about the emotional toll of watching someone she loves continue to struggle despite years of support. She noted that there have been occasions when members of the public contacted her after spotting her brother wandering around Lagos in a distressed condition.
She also expressed disappointment that much of the caregiving responsibility has fallen on her shoulders, saying she feels physically and emotionally drained after years of trying to keep the family together.
Her emotional appeal has generated widespread sympathy on social media, with many Nigerians encouraging her to remain strong while calling for greater awareness of mental health and substance abuse challenges.
Others urged government agencies, healthcare professionals, non-governmental organizations and well-meaning individuals to provide more support for families caring for relatives facing addiction and mental illness.
The incident has also reignited conversations about the need for improved mental healthcare services, accessible rehabilitation programmes and stronger support systems to help families dealing with long-term psychological and addiction-related conditions.
