Actor and singer Gabriel Afolayan has said the rising popularity of Yoruba films is not accidental, stressing that it is the outcome of consistent effort and long-term commitment from filmmakers in the industry.
Speaking on the growing attention now enjoyed by Yoruba-language productions across cinemas and streaming platforms, he noted that the progress being seen today is the result of years of groundwork by actors, writers, and producers who remained dedicated even when the industry had less visibility.
According to him, the success should not be treated as a surprise, but as a natural reward for persistence and improvement in storytelling quality.
He explained that practitioners in the Yoruba film space have worked steadily to raise production standards, expand narratives, and connect more deeply with audiences both locally and internationally. This, he said, is what is now reflecting in the wider acceptance of the films.
Gabriel added that the industry’s current recognition is proof that consistency eventually produces results. He maintained that creatives who remain focused on their craft will always find an audience in due time.
Beyond the conversation around Yoruba cinema, the actor also opened up about his personal philosophy toward acting. He described every role he takes as a learning process, saying he does not approach characters with the mindset of competition or ranking.
He explained that each character comes with its own emotional demands, preparation style, and interpretation challenges. For him, acting is less about which role is bigger and more about how much growth each one brings.
Gabriel also noted that he tries not to carry roles personally, instead focusing on understanding the assignment and delivering according to the demands of the script. In his words, acting requires constant research, emotional adjustment, and mental flexibility.
He advised creatives in the entertainment industry to avoid chasing validation and instead concentrate on doing quality work. According to him, audience feedback will always follow when the performance is genuine.
“Love your craft, understand your responsibility, and do the work. The audience will respond on their own,” he said in summary.
Born into the famous Afolayan film family, Gabriel is the son of veteran filmmaker Adeyemi Afolayan, popularly known as Ade Love, and the younger brother of acclaimed director Kunle Afolayan.
With a background in Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, he has built a career that spans both music and film.
He has featured in several notable productions including Hoodrush, Aramotu, Coming from Insanity, and Citation.
Alongside acting, he has also released music projects such as Awelewa and Kokoro Ife, earning recognition for balancing both creative fields successfully.
His career continues to reflect a blend of artistic discipline and versatility, making him one of the notable voices in contemporary Nigerian entertainment.
