Afrobeats star Wizkid has shared details about how Justin Bieber joined the remix of his global hit “Essence,” saying the collaboration came together quickly after the pair got in touch.

According to the singer, Bieber wasted no time in sending his contribution, and the quality of the verse made the decision to release it an easy one.

“Justin Bieber and I was talking and he sent his verse on Essence rmx almost immediately, it sounded good that’s why I put it out,” Wizkid said.

The award-winning musician stressed that popularity or status has never influenced his decisions when it comes to releasing music. He maintained that every collaboration must meet his creative standards regardless of who is involved.

“I don’t care how big your name is if it doesn’t sound right I’m not putting it out no matter who you are,” he added.

The “Essence” remix featuring Bieber went on to become a major international success, helping push the song to even greater heights and introducing Afrobeats to a wider global audience.

The connection between Wizkid and Justin Bieber is rooted in music, not a long public personal history. Their most notable link remains the global remix of Wizkid’s breakout track “Essence,” originally released in 2020 as part of the album Made in Lagos featuring Tems.

The song gained massive international traction months after release, becoming one of the defining Afrobeats records to break into mainstream global charts. As its popularity spread, an official remix was later created featuring Justin Bieber, alongside Tems.

Bieber’s involvement came at a time when “Essence” had already become a cultural moment worldwide. According to Wizkid, the collaboration was straightforward and based on musical interest rather than long-term personal ties. Bieber reportedly sent in his verse quickly after communication began, and Wizkid approved it based on its sound and fit with the record.

The partnership shows a growing bridge between Afrobeats and global pop, with both artists meeting on common ground through a song that had already achieved international recognition. While they do not have a widely documented personal relationship beyond music, the remix marked a key crossover moment for both camps, especially in expanding Afrobeats’ global reach.
