"We Are A Dirty People" — Kunle Remi Blames Poor Waste Disposal For Lagos Flooding

Actor Kunle Remi has added his voice to the growing conversation about flooding in Lagos, urging residents to rethink the way they dispose of waste and care for their surroundings.

With heavy rainfall continuing to affect many parts of the state, the Nollywood star said the problem goes beyond the weather, insisting that human behaviour plays a major role in making flooding worse. According to him, blocked drainage systems caused by indiscriminate waste disposal have become a recurring issue that cannot be ignored.

Kunle Remi lamented that many people still treat drainage channels like dumping sites, throwing everything from plastic bottles and beverage cans to food packs and other household waste into gutters. He noted that once these drains become clogged, rainwater has little or no pathway to flow, leading to flooded roads, damaged property and disrupted daily activities.

The actor stressed that cleaner communities can only be achieved when residents take personal responsibility for their actions. He encouraged people to stop littering public spaces and to be mindful of how they dispose of refuse, describing it as a simple but important step toward reducing the impact of flooding.

He also called on members of the public not to stay silent when they witness irresponsible behaviour. Instead, he urged them to politely correct or discourage anyone seen dumping waste into drainage channels or on the streets, saying lasting change requires collective effort rather than leaving the responsibility to government agencies alone.

Motorists were equally reminded to avoid throwing trash out of their vehicle windows, a habit that often contributes to blocked drains after rainfall washes the waste into waterways. Kunle Remi said keeping Lagos clean begins with everyday decisions made by individuals, adding that everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment.

He said:

"We are a dirty people, and that's why flooding keeps getting worse," Kunle Remi said. "Let us stop dumping refuse in drainage channels. We are not animals. If you see anyone throwing waste into the drains, call them out or confront them. People throw cans, plastic bottles and all kinds of rubbish everywhere. Why then won't there be flooding?"

His comments come at a time when several communities in Lagos continue to grapple with flooding during the rainy season, a challenge that frequently affects transportation, businesses and residential areas. Environmental experts have repeatedly identified poor waste management and blocked drainage systems as major factors that worsen the situation whenever there is prolonged rainfall.

For Kunle Remi, addressing the problem starts with a change in attitude. He believes that if residents become more conscious of their actions and take better care of public spaces, the city can gradually reduce the recurring flood incidents that have become a source of concern for many families.

He added, "Let us all try to do the right thing. Stop throwing trash out of your car windows."

The actor's message serves as a reminder that while infrastructure and government interventions remain important, individual responsibility is equally essential. A cleaner environment, properly maintained drainage channels and a commitment to responsible waste disposal could make a significant difference in keeping Lagos safer during the rainy season.
