Nigerian singer and rapper Speed Darlington has spoken candidly about his personal life, admitting that one of his biggest concerns now is reaching an older age without building the family life he once imagined for himself.
The controversial entertainer, popularly known as Akpi, reflected on his current reality in a recent video, where he expressed disappointment that he remains unmarried and has no children despite believing he would have reached that stage of life long ago.
Known for his outspoken personality and unconventional public image, Speed Darlington shifted away from his usual humorous and dramatic style to speak about something more personal — his desire for companionship, family and a sense of fulfilment beyond career achievements.
According to him, material success and opportunities abroad no longer feel sufficient at this stage of his life.
Speaking in the video, the singer questioned whether his life would continue without experiencing marriage and parenthood.
“I am close to 60 with no wife or child. Is this how I am going to live my life? All I have to show is American papers. I want more than American papers out of life.
“I want family, freedom and respect,” he said.
His comments revealed a more reflective side of the entertainer, who suggested that his expectations for this period of his life were very different from where he currently finds himself.
Speed Darlington explained that as he got older, he imagined he would already have established a home and become a father.
Rather than focusing only on career milestones or financial accomplishments, he indicated that family now represents an important goal he feels he has not achieved.
The singer’s remarks quickly generated conversations online, with reactions ranging from sympathy to discussions about changing expectations around marriage and timing.
While some social media users encouraged him and argued that marriage can happen at any age, others pointed out that building relationships often involves more than age or success.
This is not the first time Speed Darlington has publicly discussed marriage.
Several years ago, the entertainer openly declared that he was searching for a wife and even shared a detailed description of what he considered his ideal partner.
At the time, he stated that he preferred a dark-skinned woman between the ages of 18 and 23, who would be at least 5 feet 8 inches tall, weigh less than 150 pounds and be fluent in both English and Igbo.
His comments generated attention and mixed reactions online, with some people describing his requirements as unusually specific.
Despite publicly expressing interest in settling down, no engagement, wedding announcement or confirmed relationship has followed since then.
Over the years, Speed Darlington has remained one of Nigeria’s most talked-about entertainers because of his outspoken opinions, unusual online presence and tendency to attract public attention through controversial statements.
However, his recent comments appear less focused on publicity and more on personal reflection.
His remarks also add to broader conversations around expectations placed on age, relationships and personal milestones.
For many people, marriage and children remain important life goals, while others increasingly define success differently.
For Speed Darlington, however, family appears to remain an important part of the future he still hopes to build.
Whether that chapter eventually unfolds remains uncertain, but for now, the singer says he wants more from life than accomplishments and opportunities alone.
