Nigerian football legend Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha has received a special retrospective recognition for his outstanding display at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, where he inspired the Super Eagles to one of their most memorable victories on the global stage.
The former midfield maestro was presented with a “Superior Player of the Match” award honouring his performance in Nigeria’s dramatic 3–2 comeback win against Spain on June 13, 1998, a game widely regarded as one of the highlights of Nigeria’s World Cup history.
Okocha revealed the customised silver trophy in a video shared on his Instagram page, expressing gratitude for the recognition and reflecting on the moment that earned him global acclaim more than two decades ago.
“Hello, this is JJ Okocha. I’m about to unveil this special award being given to me by FIFA,” he said in the video.
“It was given to me for winning the Superior Man of the Match in a World Cup game, Nigeria versus Spain 1998. Special thank you to Michelob ULTRA and Copa90 for this amazing recognition. I’m so honoured to receive it.”
The honour forms part of a collaborative initiative by sports drink brand Michelob ULTRA and football media platform Copa90, aimed at recognising exceptional individual performances in past World Cup tournaments. The organisers reportedly reviewed historic matches to identify players whose contributions stood out, particularly from an era before the official “Player of the Match” award was formally introduced in 2002.
Okocha’s recognition comes as little surprise to football fans who witnessed his performance in Nantes during that unforgettable encounter at the Stade de la Beaujoire.
Although he did not get on the scoresheet, the then-22-year-old midfielder controlled the tempo of the match with his exceptional dribbling ability, close ball control, and creative passing, constantly unsettling the Spanish defence and dictating Nigeria’s attacking rhythm.
Nigeria initially fell behind in the match but staged a stunning comeback to secure a 3–2 victory. The goals came through Mutiu Adepoju, an own goal from the Spanish side, and a spectacular long-range strike from Sunday Oliseh that sealed the win.
The result not only shocked Spain but also propelled the Super Eagles to the top of their group, reinforcing their reputation as one of the most exciting teams of the tournament. However, Nigeria’s journey ended in the Round of 16 following a defeat to Denmark.
Despite the eventual exit, Okocha’s influence during the group stage cemented his status as one of Africa’s most gifted footballers. His style of play—marked by flair, confidence, and unpredictability—earned him admiration from fans and respect from opponents across the world.
Over the years, Okocha’s legacy has continued to grow, with many football analysts and former players ranking him among the most skillful midfielders in the history of the game.
The latest recognition adds another layer to his decorated career, further celebrating his contribution to Nigeria’s football heritage and his impact on the global stage.
The honour also arrives at a time when attention is shifting toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup cycle, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While Nigeria did not qualify for the tournament, the celebration of past heroes like Okocha keeps memories of the nation’s rich World Cup history alive.
For many fans, the award serves as a reminder of a golden era in Nigerian football—one defined by creativity, fearless attacking play, and unforgettable moments led by talents like Jay-Jay Okocha.
