Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has spoken candidly about how music completely changed her life trajectory, revealing that without her career in the industry, she believes she would likely have been unemployed.
The 24-year-old singer made the revelation during a recent conversation with EE72, where she reflected on her rise to fame, her personality, and how quickly her life transformed after entering the music industry.
According to Ayra Starr, she does not see herself pursuing other creative paths such as content creation if music had not worked out, describing such alternatives as too demanding for her at the time.
“If I were not doing music, I would literally be unemployed. I do not even think I would be a content creator. That would be a lot of work,” she said.
She added humorously that without her music career, her life would likely have been very simple and uneventful, spending most of her time at home with her family.
“I would just be vibing in my mother’s house, eating my mother’s food,” she said.
The singer also reflected on her excitement when she discovered that Mavin Records had already been monitoring her music before officially signing her.
She described the moment as surreal, noting that knowing industry giants were already aware of her talent gave her confidence early in her journey.
“I was so excited when I found out they were listening to my music. You know who it is,” she said.
Ayra Starr also opened up about her personality in the spotlight, admitting that she sometimes feels she reveals too much about herself during interviews and public appearances.
According to her, the presence of cameras makes her more expressive than she intends, often leading to oversharing personal details.
“I really wish people knew less about me. Once the camera comes on, I cannot stop talking. And I feel like I overshare,” she added.
Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, Ayra Starr rose to prominence after her breakout single Bloody Samaritan in 2021, which quickly established her as one of the most promising young voices in Afrobeats.
Her career took a major leap after signing with Mavin Records in 2020, a decision that positioned her under one of Nigeria’s most influential music labels.
Since then, she has released several hit songs and projects, earning both local and international recognition, awards, and a rapidly growing global fanbase.
Her success story has often been linked to her unique sound, youthful energy, and strong digital presence, which have helped her connect with audiences across different continents.
Speaking previously about how she was signed, Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy explained that her talent immediately stood out to him after discovering her music online.
He noted that attempts to reach her initially were unsuccessful, prompting him to contact her family directly before eventually securing her signing.
“She didn’t answer me first,” he had said, referring to his early attempts to reach her.
He added that after spotting a post featuring her brother, he reached out to him, a move that eventually led to her joining the label.
Today, Ayra Starr stands as one of the leading female voices in Afrobeats, with her journey from a teenager posting music online to an international star often cited as an example of how digital platforms have reshaped the Nigerian music industry.
Her latest comments continue to spark conversations among fans about fame, humility, and the unpredictable nature of success in the entertainment world.
