Actress Lilan Esoro has expressed concern over rising rental costs after reacting to the complaint of a Lagos Island entrepreneur who recently spoke about her ongoing dispute with her landlord, including a steep rent increase, eviction pressure and the disconnection of electricity to her apartment.
In her account, the entrepreneur alleged that she sustained injuries and was hospitalized after an incident linked to the prolonged power outage at her residence.
"I sustained injuries yesterday at about 10:00 p.m. and ended up in the hospital with injuries to my hand and waist. This happened because my landlord disconnected the electricity supply to my apartment and has kept it off for the past 72 hours.
My rent was increased by over 392.32%.
Because I could not immediately meet the new amount, I requested a staggered payment plan, which was initially accepted. Despite this, the landlord still moved to evict me so that he could bring in new tenants willing to pay as much as ₦50 million.
If you want to evict me now, why not follow the legal process? Why resort to intimidation and harassment by cutting off my electricity for days?".
Reacting to the entrepreneur's claims, Esoro questioned the justification for significant rent increases where no improvements have been made to the property.
"Same house you already own, with no renovations done, and you increase the rent just because you can. On what ground?. Some landlords really need to do better. Show a little empathy and kindness."
The actress maintained that landlords should exercise fairness and understanding when reviewing rents, especially in difficult economic conditions.
Lilan Esoro's reaction echoes the concerns raised by the entrepreneur, who says she has faced both financial pressure and hardship during her dispute with her landlord. While landlords have the right to review rental agreements, the actress believes such decisions should be handled with empathy and within the bounds of the law.
