Kunle Afolayan’s critically acclaimed film franchise, Anikulapo, has continued its impressive run on the international stage after securing the award for Best African Series at the 15th Ghana Movie Awards held in Accra.

The celebrated Nigerian filmmaker confirmed the achievement in a social media post on Monday, expressing excitement over the recognition and praising the cast and crew who contributed to the project’s success.

According to him, the win represents a major milestone not only for the franchise but also for African storytelling on global streaming platforms.

The award ceremony, which took place at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, brought together key players in the African film industry, including actors, producers, directors, and media personalities.

This year’s edition was themed “Rewarding African Excellence,” reflecting the growing influence and competitiveness of African cinema across international markets.

Alongside Anikulapo’s victory, Ghanaian actress Fella Makafui also emerged as Best Actress in the same category, further highlighting the strong representation of Ghanaian talent at the event.

The red carpet segment of the ceremony attracted widespread attention, with stars showcasing a blend of modern fashion and traditional African designs, reinforcing the cultural pride associated with the awards night.

Anikulapo began as a feature film released in 2022 under Afolayan’s KAP Motion Pictures. The film is set in the ancient Oyo Empire and follows the journey of Saro, a travelling cloth weaver whose life takes a dramatic turn after he acquires a mysterious ability to resurrect the dead.

The film’s unique storytelling, rich cultural themes, and strong cinematography helped it gain global recognition after its release on Netflix.

Following its success, the story was expanded into a series titled Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre, which premiered in 2024.

The series featured returning actors such as Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, and Sola Sobowale, while also introducing new characters that deepened the storyline and expanded the fictional universe.

Due to its popularity, the franchise returned in 2026 with a second season titled Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens.

The latest installment continued to build on the mythological and historical themes that have defined the series, further strengthening its appeal to both local and international audiences.

Industry observers say the latest award underscores the increasing global recognition of African original content, particularly productions that blend cultural heritage with modern storytelling techniques.

It also reflects the growing impact of streaming platforms like Netflix in promoting African films to a wider audience.

With this latest achievement, Kunle Afolayan continues to cement his reputation as one of Africa’s leading filmmakers, while the Anikulapo franchise remains one of the continent’s most successful and culturally significant screen projects.
