Veteran filmmaker Tunde Kelani has paid an emotional tribute to late actor and academic Kola Oyewo, describing his performance as Oba Lapite in the 1999 classic Saworoide as one of the most powerful portrayals in Nigerian cinema history.

In a reflective message titled “Farewell, Professor Kola Oyewo, Farewell, Oba Lapite,” Kelani mourned the passing of the respected actor, who appeared in several of his acclaimed productions, including Koseegbe, Oleku, and Saworoide.

Kelani noted that Oyewo’s interpretation of Oba Lapite brought rare emotional depth to the character, blending authority, vulnerability, and cultural richness in a way that left a lasting impression on audiences.

He recalled that the character’s storyline ended with a public execution in the film, a moment that made it impossible for him to reintroduce the character later in the narrative, a creative decision he still reflects on with emotion.

The filmmaker praised Oyewo not only as a gifted performer but also as a scholar who embodied the fusion of academic excellence and artistic expression throughout his career.

According to Kelani, Oyewo belonged to a generation of theatre practitioners who bridged the gap between classroom knowledge and stage performance, influencing countless students, actors, and filmmakers across Nigeria and beyond.

Oyewo’s death was earlier announced by fellow actor Kunle Afod, sparking tributes from across the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Born in Osun State in 1946, Oyewo began his acting journey in the 1960s and went on to become one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nollywood, with standout roles in productions such as The Gods Are Not to Blame, Sango, and Super Story.

Beyond acting, he built a strong academic legacy, earning a doctorate in Drama and teaching at several Nigerian universities, where he mentored a new generation of creatives.

His passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian theatre and film, leaving behind a legacy defined by excellence, cultural preservation, and artistic dedication.
