One of the most frequently asked questions in Nollywood circles is how much top actors earn per movie.

The topic continues to generate curiosity among fans and remains a key discussion point for producers, especially when planning film budgets.

However, the answer is not straightforward, as earnings vary widely depending on the actor, production scale, and distribution method.

In 2026, Nollywood is experiencing a steady rise in production costs, particularly at the top tier of the industry.

This increase is largely driven by the expansion of cinema releases, streaming platform investments, and the growing international demand for Nigerian films. As a result, actor fees have also adjusted upward compared to previous years.

At the highest level of the industry, A-list Nollywood actors now command between ₦5 million and ₦20 million per movie. In exceptional cases, fees can even exceed this range, especially for high-budget productions backed by major studios or streaming platforms.

These actors are considered “bankable,” meaning their involvement alone can attract investors, distributors, and audiences.

Names often associated with this tier include Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Nouah, Funke Akindele, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), Mercy Johnson, and Jim Iyke.

Their popularity and track records give producers confidence that their films will perform well commercially, making their fees a worthwhile investment.

Mid-level actors form the backbone of most Nollywood productions. These performers typically earn between ₦1 million and ₦5 million per film.

While they may not command the same influence as top stars, they are widely recognised and often featured in both cinema and streaming projects. Their fees are highly flexible and depend largely on negotiation, role size, and production budget.

At the lower end of the industry, emerging actors and supporting cast members earn significantly less. Fees in this category range from about ₦50,000 to ₦500,000 per production. In many low-budget films, some actors accept basic allowances such as transportation, accommodation, or feeding, especially when trying to gain visibility and build their portfolios.

The meaning of “A-list” in Nollywood is not strictly defined, but it generally refers to actors whose names can drive box office sales or secure distribution deals.

Producers often rely on such actors as a marketing strategy, using their popularity to attract audiences even before a film is released.

Distribution platforms also play a major role in determining how much actors are paid. Cinema productions usually offer higher fees due to larger budgets and box office expectations.

With Nigeria’s cinema industry generating billions of naira annually, producers are more willing to invest heavily in top-tier talent.

Streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Showmax have also reshaped the industry.

These platforms typically provide stronger budgets compared to independent producers, allowing actors to earn more competitive fees.

However, projects released directly on YouTube or through home video channels often pay less, although they offer actors higher visibility and faster turnaround opportunities.

Economic factors also influence earnings. The depreciation of the naira has affected the real value of actor fees, especially for those paid exclusively in local currency.

While nominal amounts have increased, inflation has reduced purchasing power, making international or dollar-based deals more attractive for top performers.

Despite rising figures, most Nollywood productions still operate on modest budgets. A significant number of films are produced independently, meaning only a small portion can afford A-list talent. Producers often balance costs by combining one or two major stars with mid-level actors to stay within budget while still maintaining audience appeal.

Ultimately, there is no fixed rate in Nollywood. Actor fees are determined by negotiation, production strength, and market demand.

While A-list stars can earn tens of millions per film, the majority of actors work within far smaller ranges, reflecting the diverse and evolving structure of the Nigerian film industry.
