Popular media personality and television host IK Osakioduwa has opened up about the reason he did not return as host of the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), ending a long-standing association with the prestigious event.
For over a decade, IK was regarded as the face of the awards ceremony, having hosted every edition since its debut in 2013.
His absence from the 12th edition of the AMVCA, held in Lagos, sparked discussions among fans and industry watchers who wondered why he was missing from the stage.
Speaking during an interview on The Morayo Show, the broadcaster clarified that there was no conflict between him and the organisers of the event.
According to him, his decision was based on personal values and beliefs rather than any misunderstanding with Africa Magic.
IK explained that he strongly believes in divine direction and timing. He noted that he did not feel led to be part of the 2026 edition, stressing that every opportunity comes at the right time and season.
The veteran presenter also expressed appreciation for Africa Magic, describing the relationship between both parties as one built on mutual respect and admiration.
While discussing the factors behind his absence, IK revealed that some of the sponsors associated with the event did not align with his personal principles.
He stated that he has consistently avoided promoting products related to alcohol and tobacco throughout his career.
According to him, accepting the hosting role under such circumstances would have made it difficult for him to fully carry out the expectations attached to the assignment. Rather than compromise his convictions, he chose to step aside from the event.
The 2026 edition of the AMVCA took place on May 9 at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos. In IK’s place, organisers selected comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma alongside South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha to co-host the ceremony.
The change marked a significant moment in the history of the awards, as it was the first time since the AMVCA was established that IK was not on stage as host.
Over the years, he became one of the most recognisable personalities linked to the event, earning praise for his professionalism, humour and ability to engage audiences.
Despite missing this year’s edition, IK made it clear that his relationship with Africa Magic remains intact. His comments suggest that his decision was purely personal, driven by his commitment to maintaining the values he has chosen to uphold throughout his career.
