Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has revealed why she does not see herself getting into a romantic relationship with any Nigerian celebrity.

The award-winning artiste made the revelation while speaking with an interviewer on the sidelines of the 2026 BET Awards.

During the conversation, she was asked whether she would ever make the first move if given the opportunity to date Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who has recently attracted attention from fans on social media.

Responding with a smile, Tems admitted that she knows of the football star but has never met him personally. However, she made it clear that even if they eventually crossed paths, pursuing a romantic relationship would not be something she would consider.

According to the "Love Me Jeje" singer, her relationship with fellow Nigerian celebrities is built on friendship, mutual respect and a sense of family, making it difficult for her to develop romantic feelings for any of them.

"I know who Maduka Okoye is but I don't know him personally. I wish I did though. But shooting shots at him, we don't do that over here," she said.

Tems further explained that she naturally views Nigerian male entertainers and public figures as brothers rather than potential partners.

"We Nigerian celebrities befriend each other and we are family. I see my male colleagues as brothers," she added.

Her comments have generated mixed reactions online. While some fans praised her for maintaining professional boundaries within the entertainment industry, others expressed surprise that the singer completely ruled out dating someone from the Nigerian celebrity circle.

Tems has largely kept her private life away from public attention despite being one of Africa's biggest music exports.

Since rising to global fame, she has remained focused on her music career, earning international recognition through chart-topping collaborations, Grammy success and performances on some of the world's biggest stages.

Over the years, the singer has occasionally spoken about relationships and the qualities she admires in a life partner. She has previously said that she values sincerity, maturity and a strong fear of God, while also revealing that she once experienced a toxic relationship that shaped her outlook on love.

With her latest remarks, Tems appears determined to keep her personal and professional lives separate. By describing her fellow Nigerian celebrities as family, she has made it clear that romance within that circle is not something she is interested in pursuing, regardless of public speculation or fans' matchmaking efforts.
