Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, has revealed that his entry into the Nigerian film industry was never a planned career move, describing it instead as a fortunate accident that unfolded over time.
The comic actor made the disclosure during a recent appearance on the Selah Meditate Podcast, where he reflected on his early career, his transition into acting, and the realities of fame in the entertainment industry.
According to Owoh, his original ambition was not to appear in front of the camera. He explained that he initially worked as a scriptwriter behind the scenes and had little interest in becoming a performer.
“My coming in front of the camera was an accident. I was a scriptwriter behind the scenes and people started telling me to start performing in front of the camera,” he said.
The actor noted that colleagues who worked with him at the time constantly encouraged him to try acting because of his natural sense of humour and ability to make people laugh effortlessly, even outside scripted performances.
Over time, what started as lighthearted encouragement gradually turned into opportunities. Owoh recalled that in the 1980s, the then Anambra Television (ATV) created a short comedy segment specifically around him after observing his comedic personality during production work.
He explained that the segment, which lasted about seven minutes, became an early turning point in his entertainment journey. The positive reactions from viewers and production staff encouraged him to take acting more seriously.
According to him, that unexpected exposure marked the beginning of what would eventually become a long and successful career in Nollywood, even though he never initially set out to become an actor.
Owoh added that he only embraced acting fully after seeing how well audiences responded to his performances. What began as an informal experiment gradually transformed into a professional path that defined his legacy in the Nigerian film industry.
Reflecting on his decades in the spotlight, the veteran actor also spoke about the challenges that come with fame. While acknowledging the benefits of being a public figure, he stressed that celebrity status often comes with limitations that many people do not consider.
“Fame took away my freedom. A lot of people want to be celebrities, they only know the benefits but not the downsides,” he said.
He explained that being widely recognised has affected his personal lifestyle, making it difficult for him to enjoy privacy or move around freely without public attention.
According to him, many aspiring entertainers focus only on the glamour, popularity, and financial rewards associated with fame, without understanding the restrictions and responsibilities that come with it.
Owoh noted that constant public recognition means celebrities must always be mindful of their actions, appearances, and interactions, as they are often under scrutiny both in public and online spaces.
Despite these challenges, the actor remains one of Nollywood’s most respected comic figures, with a career spanning several decades and numerous acclaimed performances that have left a lasting impact on African cinema.
His journey from a behind-the-scenes scriptwriter to a household name remains one of Nollywood’s most remarkable success stories, shaped largely by chance, talent, and encouragement from those around him.
