The global box office in 2026 has been highly competitive, with a mix of sequels, original stories, and international films performing strongly worldwide. However, only one movie has managed to cross the $1 billion mark so far this year.

At the top of the chart is The Super Mario Galaxy, which has grossed just over $1 billion globally. The animated film expands the Mario universe into a large-scale space adventure, combining colourful visuals, fast-paced action, and family-friendly storytelling.

While critics described the plot as uneven, audiences embraced its creativity and spectacle, making it the year’s biggest commercial success.

In second place is Michael, the biopic based on the life and legacy of Michael Jackson. The film has earned close to $940 million globally, driven by strong emotional appeal and a powerful performance by Jaafar Jackson in the lead role.

It traces Michael’s journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his peak global fame, with music, performances, and personal struggles forming the emotional core of the story. It has resonated deeply with fans across different generations.

Third is Project Hail Mary, a science fiction blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling. The film follows a lone astronaut who wakes up with no memory aboard a spaceship tasked with saving Earth from a dying sun.

Its mix of science, survival, and unexpected friendship with an alien companion helped it become one of the most successful original sci-fi films in recent years, earning over $680 million worldwide.

Other major earners include The Devil Wears Prada 2, a long-awaited sequel that reunites the original cast as Runway magazine faces a modern corporate takeover, blending fashion, drama, and nostalgia.

Meanwhile, Pegasus 3 stands out as a Chinese sports comedy that dominated its local market, telling the story of an underdog racing team fighting against corruption and pressure.

Pixar’s Hoppers also performed strongly, delivering a unique animated story about a young student who transfers her consciousness into a robotic animal to save an endangered ecosystem.

It combines humour, emotion, and creativity in a way that appealed to global audiences. On the other hand, The Mandalorian and Grogu had a modest box office run despite high expectations, showing that even popular franchises are not guaranteed success on the big screen.

Lower-budget films like Obsession and Backrooms emerged as surprise hits, proving that strong storytelling and word-of-mouth can compete with big studio releases. Both films gained momentum over time and built loyal audiences despite limited production budgets.

In conclusion, the 2026 box office reflects a shifting global film industry where success is no longer dominated by franchises alone.

While big-budget titles still lead in revenue, originality, strong storytelling, and international appeal are increasingly shaping the rankings.

The year also highlights how audience tastes are evolving, with both spectacle-driven blockbusters and creative independent films finding space to thrive.
