Veteran American actor James Handy has died at the age of 81 following a fatal stabbing incident at a residence in Tarzana, California, authorities have confirmed.
The incident, which has shocked Hollywood and the wider entertainment industry, reportedly occurred at a home in the San Fernando Valley where the actor was staying. Police have arrested a 44-year-old man identified as Michael Gledhill in connection with the attack.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), emergency responders were called to the scene on Wednesday morning after reports of a violent altercation at the property.
Officials said Handy was found unconscious in the front yard of the residence with a stab wound to his chest. Despite rapid response from emergency medical teams, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Investigators revealed that the suspect, Gledhill, is the son of Handy’s romantic partner and also lived in the same house where the incident took place. Police said he was taken into custody shortly after the attack.
In a disturbing detail released by authorities, a 911 call from the scene reportedly included the caller stating: “I am the son of man. I just killed the man of sin,” a statement that has since raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Law enforcement officials added that the suspect later approached officers voluntarily and allegedly admitted involvement in the stabbing before being arrested without further incident. He has since been booked on suspicion of murder at Van Nuys Jail, with bail set at $2 million while investigations continue.
The LAPD has not yet confirmed a motive for the attack, and detectives are still working to establish the events that led to the deadly confrontation inside the residence.
The news of Handy’s death has sent shockwaves through the entertainment community, with many remembering him as a versatile character actor with a career spanning several decades.
Born in New York, James Handy began his acting journey in 1977 and steadily built a reputation as a dependable and skilled supporting actor in both film and television.
He became widely recognised for his role as an exterminator in the 1995 blockbuster Jumanji, a film that remains one of Hollywood’s most beloved family adventure movies.
In later years, he also appeared in major productions such as Top Gun: Maverick (2022), where he starred alongside Hollywood icon Tom Cruise, playing the role of bartender Jimmy.
Beyond his film appearances, Handy maintained a strong presence on television, featuring in several popular crime and legal drama series over the years. His credits include appearances in NCIS: Los Angeles, CSI: NY, NYPD Blue, and L.A. Law, among others.
Colleagues in the industry have described him as a dedicated professional who consistently delivered memorable performances, even in smaller roles that contributed significantly to the overall storytelling of major productions.
His long-standing career made him a familiar face to audiences, even if his name was not always at the forefront of Hollywood headlines.
As news of his passing spreads, tributes are expected to continue pouring in from fans, co-stars, and industry professionals who worked with him throughout his decades in film and television.
Authorities in California have stated that the investigation into the stabbing is ongoing, with detectives reviewing evidence and witness statements to fully understand the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
For now, the entertainment world mourns the loss of a veteran performer whose work quietly but meaningfully shaped many iconic film and television moments over the past several decades.
