Prominent cleric Bishop Funke Felix-Adejumo has stirred conversations with her strong views on financial independence, insisting that women should take deliberate steps to secure their own economic future rather than relying entirely on their husbands or other people for survival.
According to her, every woman has the capacity to create value and should be intentional about developing skills, building businesses, investing wisely and discovering opportunities that can generate sustainable income. She maintained that financial empowerment goes beyond having money, describing it as a pathway to confidence, self-worth and personal fulfillment.
Felix-Adejumo argued that many women unknowingly limit themselves by placing all their financial expectations on their spouses. While acknowledging the role of marriage as a partnership, she stressed that women should also contribute meaningfully to their own growth and stability.
“Like yourself and invest in yourself. If the totality of your spending is based on your husband, you are a waste. Don’t let your life be based on S+xually Transmitted Money (STM),” she said.
The bishop's remarks highlighted the importance of self-development, urging women to see themselves as individuals with unique gifts and abilities capable of creating opportunities. She noted that discovering one's purpose and maximizing personal potential can open doors to greater achievements in life.
She further emphasized that success is often built on qualities such as humility, gratitude and the willingness to learn from mistakes and correction. In her view, women who continuously improve themselves and remain open to growth are more likely to thrive in their careers, businesses and personal lives.
Beyond finances, Felix-Adejumo spoke about the importance of preserving personal values and maintaining dignity regardless of economic pressures. She warned against seeking financial comfort through relationships that compromise moral standards, stressing that temporary gains should never come at the expense of self-respect.
“Love the Lord, serve the Lord and be passionate about God. You can’t be sleeping around with men to have money. Keep your dignity and don’t let anybody mess you up, but firmly believe in yourself.”
She also challenged women to reject negative labels and societal limitations, urging them to celebrate their accomplishments and have confidence in their abilities. According to her, believing in oneself is a critical step toward achieving lasting success
She maintained that women should never underestimate their potential, insisting that financial independence, personal growth and unwavering self-belief remain essential ingredients for a fulfilling and impactful life.
