Nollywood audiences now have another unconventional story to explore following the online release of Donkey Curse, a fantasy-comedy film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Biodun Stephen.
After attracting attention during selected festival screenings, the movie officially premiered online in June 2026 and is now available to stream on the KBoxOffice YouTube channel.
Blending comedy, fantasy and cultural storytelling, Donkey Curse arrives with an unusual premise that separates it from conventional romantic and family dramas commonly associated with Nollywood’s digital space.
From International Screenings To Online Release
Before making its public online debut, Donkey Curse had already built visibility through appearances at film festivals.
The movie screened at events including the Eko International Film Festival and Paris NollywoodWeek in 2023, giving audiences an early introduction to its distinctive concept and storytelling approach.
Its eventual digital release opens the project to a wider audience, allowing viewers to experience a film that combines humour with elements of fantasy and Nigerian cultural identity.
The move also reflects Nollywood’s growing strategy of extending a film’s life beyond festivals through online distribution.
A Story Built Around One Unusual Curse
At the centre of Donkey Curse is Richard Halim, played by Timini Egbuson.
Richard is introduced as an arrogant “I Just Got Back” (IJGB) character who returns to Nigeria from the United Kingdom carrying confidence, attitude and a sense of superiority.
However, his return takes an unexpected turn after a chance encounter with Madam Florence Ugbebor, a mysterious elderly woman from Edo State.
Following the encounter, Richard becomes trapped under what is known as the “donkey curse.”
The unusual spell changes his behaviour completely.
Instead of resisting requests or acting independently, he suddenly becomes incapable of saying no and must enthusiastically agree to whatever anyone asks of him.
What follows is a series of situations that transform his daily life and create moments of comedy, confusion and unexpected consequences.
The film uses this unusual condition to explore behaviour, personal change and the consequences of arrogance through humour and fantasy.
Biodun Stephen Expands Her Storytelling Range
Directed by Biodun Stephen and written by Tim McManus, the film presents another example of Nollywood’s increasing willingness to experiment with genre combinations.
Known for delivering emotionally driven and socially relatable stories, Biodun Stephen takes a different direction here by introducing fantasy elements into a comedy framework.
The storytelling combines cultural references with modern experiences, creating a setting where ordinary life suddenly collides with supernatural consequences.
Familiar Faces Drive The Story
The cast brings together a mix of established and popular Nollywood performers.
Timini Egbuson leads the project as Richard, supported by performances from Bimbo Ademoye, Mike Afolarin, Beverly Osu and MC Lively.
Their combined presence adds energy to the production and helps balance the film’s humorous and fantasy-driven moments.
The movie also carries added interest because it exists within a connected story world.
Donkey Curse serves as a prequel to the comedy film Move Like a Boss, giving viewers additional context within the broader narrative universe.
Expanding Nollywood’s Creative Direction
Fantasy-comedy remains a relatively less explored area in mainstream Nollywood compared to romance and family drama.
With Donkey Curse, audiences are offered a story that introduces supernatural consequences while maintaining a playful and entertaining tone.
Now streaming on KBoxOffice, the film adds another creative title to Nollywood’s growing collection of digital releases.
