A public exchange has erupted between Afrobeats star Davido and popular Hausa singer Dauda Rarara following contrasting views over raising awareness about insecurity in Nigeria on an international stage.
The disagreement began after Davido appeared at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles wearing a symbolic jacket carrying the message “Bring Them Home” alongside the names of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The performance attracted attention online, with many interpreting the gesture as a call for greater awareness and urgency regarding insecurity and the safety of the kidnapped victims.
However, Rarara strongly disagreed with the move.
In a video shared online, the singer questioned Davido’s decision to spotlight the issue during an international event, arguing that such actions could project a negative image of Nigeria globally.
According to Rarara, national security matters should be approached with caution, especially while rescue efforts and security operations may still be ongoing.
He criticised what he described as the growing trend of turning sensitive national issues into public campaigns without considering possible consequences.
Rarara argued that highlighting insecurity before an international audience could unintentionally strengthen negative narratives about the country and affect its reputation abroad.
He further questioned whether political interests influenced the singer’s action and suggested that public figures should avoid turning national tragedies into political talking points.
The singer also referenced reports surrounding the abduction, claiming there were circumstances behind the incident that many members of the public might not fully understand.
According to him, discussions around such issues should reflect awareness of ongoing efforts by security agencies and government institutions.
His comments quickly sparked reactions online, with supporters and critics debating whether public advocacy on global stages helps draw attention to urgent issues or risks damaging national image.
Davido later responded.
Rather than immediately addressing the substance of Rarara’s remarks, the singer first reacted briefly on social media by quoting part of the comments and posting a short message that appeared dismissive.
The exchange soon intensified.
After Rarara responded again, Davido posted another message in Hausa, directly criticising the singer and suggesting he lacked understanding of the issue.
The conversation later shifted toward a broader discussion about citizenship, responsibility and public silence.
In a follow-up statement, Davido defended his decision to use his platform to raise awareness.
The singer argued that Nigerians should not remain quiet in the face of insecurity and insisted that citizens have a responsibility to speak openly about issues affecting lives and communities.
He also criticised what he described as placing political loyalty above national interest.
According to Davido, patriotism should involve honesty about challenges facing the country rather than avoiding difficult conversations.
His remarks received support from some followers who argued that celebrities have influence and should use their platforms to spotlight social concerns.
Others sided with Rarara, maintaining that public figures should be mindful of how national issues are presented internationally.
The exchange has continued to generate discussion across social media, extending beyond entertainment into wider conversations about activism, public responsibility and how national issues should be addressed in the global spotlight.
The incident has also highlighted the growing role celebrities now play in shaping public conversations far beyond music and entertainment.
