Faith-based drama Remi & Nneoma, starring actress and media personality Bisola Aiyeola, has enjoyed a remarkable start at the Nigerian box office, becoming the highest-opening faith-based Nollywood film in the country's cinema history.
According to distributor Nile Entertainment, the movie generated ₦33.7 million during its opening weekend after debuting in cinemas nationwide on June 26.
The impressive performance also saw the film emerge as the top-performing Nigerian title at the weekend box office, highlighting the growing audience for inspirational and family-oriented stories.
Announcing the milestone on its official Instagram page, Nile Entertainment expressed appreciation to moviegoers for their overwhelming support.
The company described the achievement as more than just a commercial success, saying the film has become a movement that continues to resonate with audiences across the country. It also encouraged Nigerians who are yet to watch the movie to visit cinemas nationwide.
Remi & Nneoma offers a contemporary interpretation of the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi, relocating the timeless narrative to an Ikwerre community in present-day Nigeria.
Rather than simply recreating the biblical account, the filmmakers weave familiar themes of loyalty, sacrifice, faith and resilience into a modern African setting, making the story relatable to today's audience.
The drama centres on Nneoma and her daughter-in-law, Remi, whose lives are changed by a devastating family tragedy.
Faced with grief and uncertainty, the two women choose to remain united instead of allowing hardship to separate them. As they navigate widowhood and the expectations of their community, they confront difficult cultural traditions while searching for hope and a fresh beginning.
The emotional storyline explores themes such as family, compassion, perseverance and unwavering faith, elements that have contributed to the film's positive reception among cinema audiences.
Directed by Lyndsey Efejuku, the film was written by Adelarin Awotedu and Priye Diri. Production duties were handled by Bikiya Graham-Douglas, while Solate Ovundah-Akarolo served as executive producer under the Five2Media Productions banner.
Beyond Bisola Aiyeola's performance, the movie features an ensemble cast made up of several respected Nollywood actors.
Veteran stars Liz Benson and Tina Mba play key roles alongside Uche Montana, Ifeanyi Kalu, Eucharia Anunobi, Kelechi Udegbe and Bucci Franklin, each contributing to the emotional depth of the production.
The record-breaking opening further reflects the growing strength of Nigeria's cinema industry, where locally produced films continue to attract audiences with diverse stories spanning action, romance, comedy and now increasingly successful faith-inspired dramas.
For Bisola Aiyeola, the achievement marks another milestone in her acting career as she continues to build an impressive filmography across different genres.
The success of Remi & Nneoma also demonstrates that audiences remain eager to embrace meaningful stories rooted in African culture, family values and spiritual themes.
With strong word-of-mouth and positive audience reactions already driving ticket sales, industry observers believe Remi & Nneoma could continue its impressive box office run in the coming weeks as more Nigerians head to cinemas to experience the acclaimed drama.
