YouTube has announced a major policy update that will see the platform automatically identifying and labelling videos that contain AI-generated content, marking a significant shift in how synthetic media is managed on the site.

The Google-owned video platform revealed in a recent blog post that its systems will now be capable of detecting the use of photorealistic artificial intelligence in uploaded videos.

When such content is found, the platform will apply warning labels to inform viewers that parts of the video may have been generated or heavily altered using AI tools.

According to YouTube, this change is aimed at improving transparency and helping users better understand the type of content they are watching.

The company noted that this new system will be especially useful as AI technology continues to develop rapidly and becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from real footage.

Previously, YouTube relied largely on content creators to disclose when they used AI tools in their productions.

However, under the updated approach, the responsibility is now shared with the platform itself, which will independently detect and flag such content even if creators fail to provide disclosure.

The company also explained that creators will not be punished simply for using AI tools. Instead, the system is designed to label content for clarity rather than restrict distribution. Importantly, YouTube stated that the presence of an AI label will not negatively impact how videos are recommended by its algorithm.

However, creators who believe their content has been incorrectly flagged will have the opportunity to appeal and request a review. This, YouTube says, is to ensure fairness and accuracy in the labelling process.

The update comes at a time when generative AI tools such as Google’s Veo and ByteDance’s Seedance are becoming more advanced and widely used across the internet.

These tools are capable of producing highly realistic images, voices, and videos that closely resemble real-life footage.

Other major digital platforms are also responding to the rise of AI-generated content. Streaming services like Spotify have begun implementing similar detection systems in order to maintain transparency as synthetic media becomes more common.

Industry experts say this move reflects a broader trend among tech companies to address concerns around misinformation, deepfakes, and digital authenticity in the age of artificial intelligence.

YouTube’s latest step is expected to reshape how creators produce and label content moving forward, as the platform continues adapting to the fast-changing digital landscape.
