Nollywood actress Blessing Onwukwe has opened up about the intense public reaction to her role as Mama Monica in the viral film Monica, which has racked up massive views on YouTube and continues to spark conversations online.

Speaking in a recent interview with Punch, Onwukwe revealed that while she anticipated some level of attention following the film’s release, she did not expect audiences to blur the line between fiction and reality.

According to her, many viewers became so emotionally attached to her character that they began reacting to her personally, rather than separating her from the strict on-screen mother she portrayed.

She explained that the misunderstanding has sometimes led to online backlash, but she has learned to take it in stride. In her words, the situation initially surprised her, especially as some viewers appeared to forget that her performance was purely fictional.

However, she noted that she remains unfazed as long as things do not escalate into anything harmful or threatening.

Despite the mixed reactions, the actress described the role as a major turning point in her career. She said the visibility gained from Monica has significantly boosted her profile in the industry and reaffirmed her passion for acting.

For her, the overwhelming response is an indication that she successfully delivered a convincing performance.

Onwukwe also reflected on the deeper themes explored in the film, particularly issues surrounding parenting and family responsibility.

She used the opportunity to advise parents to be mindful of the emotional and financial burdens placed on their children at an early age.

According to her, it is important for adults to take full responsibility for the number of children they choose to have, rather than shifting that weight onto their firstborns or older siblings.

She further encouraged young women not to lose sight of their personal growth while supporting their families.

While she acknowledged the importance of family support, she stressed that time moves quickly and individuals should not neglect their own development in the process of helping others.

Discussing her acting experience, Onwukwe noted that the role of Mama Monica was one of her most challenging performances so far.

She explained that although she has previously played tough and antagonistic characters, this particular role required a deeper emotional interpretation, which made it more demanding. Nevertheless, she expressed satisfaction that audiences connected strongly with her performance.

Monica, produced by Uche Montana, is a Nollywood drama centered on the struggles of a young woman dealing with overwhelming family expectations while trying to build her own life.

Since its release on YouTube in March, the film has continued to attract massive attention, driving discussions around parenting styles, emotional pressure, and family dynamics within African societies.

Following the success of the first installment, a sequel titled Monica 2 was released on Saturday and quickly gained traction online.

The continuation of the story has further fueled conversations around the franchise, reinforcing its popularity among viewers and sustaining interest in the characters and themes introduced in the original film.
