Veteran Kannywood actress Wasila Isma'il has passed away at the age of 46 after battling a prolonged illness, leaving colleagues, fans, and the Hausa film industry in mourning.

Her death was confirmed by her former husband, Al-Amin Chiroma, who announced that she died at FOMWAN Hospital in Kaduna.

The news quickly spread across social media, where tributes began pouring in from actors, filmmakers, and admirers who remembered her contributions to Kannywood over the years.

Wasila Isma’il was born in Kaduna and rose to fame in the late 1990s during the early expansion of Hausa-language cinema.

She became widely recognized after her appearance in the 1999 film Wasila, a production directed by Yakubu Lere and featuring popular actor Ali Nuhu. Her performance in the movie helped establish her as one of the notable faces of Kannywood during its formative years.

She officially began her acting journey in 1998 with the film Jinin Masoya, marking the start of a career that would see her feature in several productions that contributed to the growth of Northern Nigeria’s film industry.

Known for her emotional depth and natural screen presence, she became a familiar name among Hausa film lovers.

In a past interview, the late actress spoke about her early career decisions, including why she insisted on changing the title of her debut film role from “Jamila” to “Wasila.” She explained that she preferred a name that would not negatively affect her personal identity, a decision the director respected at the time.

Following news of her passing, fans have taken to various social media platforms to express grief and appreciation for her legacy.

Many described her as a talented and humble actress who played a meaningful role in shaping early Kannywood storytelling.

Industry colleagues also shared condolences, highlighting her professionalism and dedication during her active years in the film industry.

While she had been less visible in recent years due to health challenges, her earlier works continued to be remembered by long-time followers of Hausa cinema.

Her death marks another sad moment for Kannywood, as the industry continues to reflect on the contributions of its pioneers. Wasila Isma’il leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances that helped shape the foundation of modern Hausa filmmaking.
