Nigerian singer Skales has shared his perspective on the financial realities of the entertainment and sports industries, stating that professional football provides a more stable source of income than music.
The “Shake Body” crooner made the remarks during an interview on The Groovy Mono Show, where he spoke about the differences in how both industries operate financially.
According to Skales, footballers benefit from a structured system that guarantees regular earnings, unlike musicians who often face uncertainty when it comes to income.
He explained that once a player is actively signed to a club and participating in professional football, they earn salaries and bonuses regardless of their level of global fame.
“Footballers earn more money than musicians,” he said, noting that consistency is one of the biggest advantages in the sport.
“As long as you are an active footballer and you’re playing, you’re earning salaries and bonuses. You don’t have to be the most popular player in the world,” he added.
Skales contrasted this with the music industry, which he described as highly competitive and unpredictable. He pointed out that success in music is often tied to trends, public reception, and factors that can quickly change.
“Music is very competitive and unpredictable. You can be here today and gone tomorrow,” he said.
The singer further explained that maintaining relevance in the music space can sometimes feel outside an artist’s control, as popularity can fluctuate due to shifting audience preferences and industry dynamics.
“Staying relevant in the music industry sometimes feels like something you can’t fully control,” he noted.
Sharing a personal experience, Skales revealed that he once lost a major endorsement deal valued at over $300,000 because it was tied to a footballer. According to him, the opportunity slipped away due to circumstances related to the athlete involved.
“I once lost a jewellery deal worth over $300,000 because it was linked to a footballer,” he disclosed.
He used the incident to illustrate how footballers often attract lucrative endorsement deals, even if they are not among the most globally recognized names in the sport.
“Footballers get endorsement deals even if they’re not globally famous,” he explained.
Skales also highlighted the disparity in earnings within the music industry itself. While a few top-tier artists achieve massive financial success, he said many others struggle to maintain consistent income streams.
“Only a few artists make a lot of money, but many are struggling to earn consistently,” he said.
The singer concluded by emphasizing that while both careers can be rewarding, football offers a clearer and more reliable financial pathway for those who make it professionally.
His comments have sparked conversations online, with fans debating the realities of both industries and the challenges faced by creatives trying to sustain long-term success.
Skales, who rose to prominence with hits like “Shake Body,” has remained active in the Nigerian music scene for over a decade, navigating the highs and lows of the industry he described as unpredictable.
His remarks now add to ongoing discussions about financial sustainability, career longevity, and the structural differences between sports and entertainment in Nigeria and beyond.
