Nollywood, Nigeria’s vibrant film industry, has always been known for its fast-rising stars and equally fast disappearing icons.

While some actors continue to dominate the screen for decades, others quietly step away at the height of their fame, choosing completely different life paths.

Interestingly, a number of once-popular Nollywood faces have left the industry to pursue military careers, professional jobs abroad, ministry work, or private lifestyles far removed from the spotlight.

One of the most surprising transformations is that of Belinda Effah, now known as Grace-Charis Bassey. After gaining recognition in Nollywood, she shocked fans when she revealed in 2026 that she had joined the United States Navy.

Her decision marked a dramatic shift from red carpets and movie sets to the structured and demanding life of military service, proving that career reinvention can happen at any stage.

Similarly, comedian Kunle Idowu (Frank Donga), who became famous for his “unemployed graduate” skits, eventually relocated to Canada.

There, he transitioned into a professional role as a Multimedia Communications Specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture in Saskatchewan.

His journey remains one of Nollywood’s most ironic success stories, as the man who once portrayed joblessness now works in a stable government position abroad.

In the earlier Nollywood era, Pat Attah was one of the most adored romantic leads. After years of fame in Nigeria, he relocated to Germany, where he embraced a quieter life focused on Christianity, music, photography, and family. Though he still maintains creative interests, he is no longer active in mainstream Nollywood productions.

Regina Askia-Williams also made a remarkable transition. Once one of Nollywood’s biggest stars in the 1990s, she moved to the United States and completely changed her career path. Today, she works as a Family Nurse Practitioner in New York City, a far cry from her days on film sets in Lagos.

Sandra Achums, another popular face from the 90s, left Nigeria in 2006 to join her husband in Germany. Since then, she has focused on family life and private business ventures, effectively stepping away from acting.

Victoria Inyama, who was a household name in early Nollywood, also relocated to the United Kingdom after marriage. She has since built a career in psychology and therapy while remaining active in social commentary online.

Veteran actor Charles Okafor, known for his strong “pastor” and authority roles, eventually left mainstream acting to focus on ministry work. He was ordained as a pastor and now engages mainly in faith-based projects and advocacy content.

Lilian Bach, once one of Nollywood’s most recognizable faces, gradually moved behind the camera into film production and business. While still based in Nigeria, she has largely stepped away from acting to focus on entrepreneurship.

Benita Nzeribe, who starred in over 150 films, also took a long break from the industry to focus on personal and family matters, leaving a noticeable gap in modern Nollywood storytelling.

Together, these stories highlight how fluid careers in Nollywood can be. From acting to aviation, medicine, ministry, and military service, these former stars show that life after fame can take many unexpected but fulfilling directions.
